While we once thought "Black Sea" might be a possible Oscar contender given the involvement of director Kevin Macdonald ("The Last King Of Scotland"), in retrospect we probably weren’t thinking too clearly. This is a straight up genre picture, and there’s nothing wrong with that when it looks as compelling as this trailer.
Jude Law leads the movie in this "Treasure Of The Sierra Madre"-esque thriller about a recently unemployed submarine captain who puts together a band of misfits to head to the Black Sea, where a bunch of Hitler’s gold may be hidden. But nothing goes as it should, as greed and other ugliness surfaces the deeper they go.
