While "Battleship" will probably still be the dumbest movie of the summer by a country mile (though with $129 million in the bank already thanks to international ticket sales, it's Universal who's laughing last), "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" could be coming in at close second.
A new international trailer has landed for the film, and it's pretty standard, derivative stuff. The G.I. Joe team is left for dead while a mad villain (Maniacal Laugh!) played by Ray Stevenson can blow up whole cities/the entire world or something blah blah blah the White House has been infiltrated. Who cares. What it's about doesn't really matter in movies like this, we suppose, though we do wish we could care about something more than usual Evil Bad Guy/Grand Scheme paradigm. But, 'Retaliation' does have one ace up its sleeve: fucking ninjas. That's about the only thing that grabbed our attention in this trailer and frankly, we'd be happy if Paramount dropped a 20-minute short version of just the ninja scenes into theaters instead. Ninjas are always cool.
Anyway, you can see the ninjas along with the rest of the brawny heroes on June 29th. Watch below. [via FirstShowing]
Based on this you'd think Byung-hun Lee was the lead. Guess they're gunning for the lucrative middle-aged Korean women demographic. Jokes aside it's unfortunate that he's becoming yet another Asian superstar that Hollywood squanders on garbage, especially since his English is fucking good.
