This week, the folks at Screen Junkies have decided to put Edgar Wright‘s "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" on the carving block with their latest Honest Trailer, and they certainly kick the movie around a bit.
I was under the impression that everyone thought ‘Scott Pilgrim’ was pretty rad, but Screen Junkies declare the movie to prioritize style over substance, to be filled with unlikeable characters, and to feel like you’re watching someone else playing a video game. Ouch. For me, as a slice of the moment of adolescence where you have to start thinking outside your own self-involved box funneled through indie rock, video games, and manga and realized with genuine passion, it’s pretty terrific.
Give the Honest Trailer a look below, and let us know if Screen Junkies got it wrong this time in the comments section.
Moving aside whether I liked the film or not for a moment, one thing I can agree with is the "style over substance" bit. Although I guess I might argue that\’s kind of the film\’s shtick (in a way), it\’s hard to ignore it upon repeat viewings.
It\’s really funny when people try to elevate bourgeois Whitehood in media by promoting its very lack of drama and danger as something sexy. People who are raised with all of their basic needs met find images in media of people who are less lucky than themselves and they think "why not me? Why don\’t I get to be special, too?". Blandness is the price you pay for safety and comfort. Deal with it.
