While there has been much hand-wringing over native and post-converted 3D, no one in their wildest imagination could have guessed that last summer “Piranha 3D” would take in over $80 million worldwide. While the news kept James Cameron up at night, the smash success of the low brow horror flick threw pundits for a loop, bucking conventional thought that audiences only want high grade, “Avatar”-like experiences if they pay premium dollars to wear those glasses at the multiplex. It turns out, 3D blood and boobs works too.
Naturally, a sequel was fast-tracked. After lensing this summer, the first teaser trailer for “Piranha 3DD” (ha!) premiered at the Scream Awards last night, and it’s exactly everything you thought it would be. Director John Gulager (the “Feast” trilogy) is keeping things pretty simple here and not rocking the boat too much, providing plenty of babes, boobs and dead bodies. And, oh yeah, David Hasselhoff. A handful of familiar faces from the first movie are back, including Christopher Lloyd and Ving Rhames, who has survived, and apparently borrowed a weapon from Cherry Darling in “Planet Terror.” Basically, if you were a fan of the first movie, this second go round will deliver more of the goods.
Unfortunately, however, you’ll have to wait for it. Though initially slotted for a November 23rd release, the movie has now been pushed into 2012, with a date still to be determined. But get an early taste below. [via Shock Til You Drop]
