It’s been 30 years since Paul Reubens‘ Pee-wee Herman had his first big-screen journey in "Pee-wee’s Big Adventure," and now, decades later, he’s back with "Pee-wee’s Big Holiday." While we’re living in an era of nostalgia-driven reboots, they haven’t always panned out (see last weekend’s "Zoolander 2"), but it seems the filmmakers here are keeping things simple and not trying to stir up the formula too much.
“It always seems best when Pee-wee has very little plot — his movies probably have the least plot in the history of cinema," director John Lee told USA Today. "Why not embrace that?"

Indeed, the Judd Apatow-produced movie finds Pee-wee traveling across the country to befriend a stranger (Joe Manganiello), and that’s about the whole sum of the premise, allowing for the character to have no shortage of detours along the way. Here’s the official synopsis:
The new film stars the beloved fun-loving hero of TV, stage and film, Pee-wee Herman. In Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, a fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger inspires Pee-wee Herman to take his first-ever holiday in this epic story of friendship and destiny. The film stars Pee-wee Herman, Joe Manganiello (True Blood, Magic Mike XXL), Jessica Pohly (Stalker), Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development) and Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), and was directed by John Lee (Wonder Showzen, Pee-wee’s Big Holiday). Paul Reubens and Paul Rust (Love, Arrested Development) wrote the film, that was produced by Reubens and Judd Apatow (Trainwreck, Bridesmaids).
"Pee-wee’s Big Holiday" will premiere at SXSW and then open in limited release and hit Netflix on March 18th. Watch below.
