Wow. Maybe it’s just the way our brains are wired, but we just saw more fireworks from 70-odd seconds of middle-aged British character actors than we got across two-and-a-half-hours of empty spectacle in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” The Guardian just debuted the first international teaser trailer for one of our most anticipated films of the rest of the year, Working Title‘s adaptation of John Le Carre‘s spy classic “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” the English-language debut of “Let The Right One In” director Tomas Alfredson, and it’s easily one of the best trailers we’ve seen in an age.
Set in the 1970s, at the height of the Cold War, and revolving around the search for a mole in the upper echelons of the British secret service, the film has a mind-blowing cast, led by Gary Oldman as George Smiley, the role inhabited by Alec Guinness in the original BBC TV version, with freshly-minted Oscar-winner Colin Firth, next big thing Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciarán Hinds, Toby Jones, John Hurt, Simon McBurney, Stephen Graham, Kathy Burke, Christian McKay and David Dencik all along for the ride.
Most crop up in the clip, and all look to be in terrific form, with Oldman in particular confirming our suspicions that he’s set for a long-overdue Oscar nomination in the central role. Alfredson’s style is firmly in place, with a glorious, chilly retro vibe across the whole thing, and some killer framing spread across the trailer. The film can’t get here soon enough: it’s all but confirmed to bow at the Venice Film Festival in September, before opening in the UK on September 16th, with a U.S. release following on November 18th. I hope I\’m wrong,but I feel somethng wrong about it now…
I heard there was a not so minor re-shoot for this film in May/June.Then Universal handed this film to Focus.And TASS won’t [i]open[/i] Venice after all.I was bit worried.But this teaser is very intriguing.I hope movie is good.It has excellent cast.
Oh. My. Fucking. God. Great teaser trailer. That score gave me goddamn chills.
The film is meant to have that 1970\’s feel. Its not a cheap look. Dont you get it. Clearly not.
Cumberbatch is the next big thing as far as I;m concerned. Awesome actor and thrilled he\’s getting such good films. The trailer looks fantastic.
I watched it twice thinking that maybe I\’d missed the goose bumps the first time round. Nope. No goose bumps.
I like the music. But frankly it looks like a cheap British made-for-tv deal. And when a character in a spy movie has to utter the shop worn \”things aren\’t always what they seem\”, that pretty much kills any hope I had that the picture will be genius.
Without showing much action it still manages to look more exciting than MI4.
Drew Taylor FTW. Elfman\’s Wolfman score is amazing.
Probably my most anticipated film of the year.

Gary Oldman for the win
Ok, I will grant that both the \”Things aren\’t what they seem\” and \”You and I aren\’t so very different\” lines are utterly cliched to the point that I almost rolled my eyes at both instances… almost.
That said, the rest of the trailer, the cast, the cinematography, etc… all look so bloody marvelous that this film looks like it could very easily make very trope and cliche in the book feel fresh and exciting.
In short, I have a woody for this movie right now. Also, it\’s nice to see Gary Oldman in a non-villan role. I\’ve loved his villains but as Gordon, he\’s showed such strong potential to play a leading role and a good guy that I\’ve longed to see something like this happen for him.
I will forever remember him best as Jean-Baptise. Emmanuel. Zorg. though.

When the first images of Oldman as Smiley were released, I was surprised by how much I thought he looked like the old Dracula from the Coppola film. Now the trailer is being cut to the \”Bram Stoker\’s Dracula\”-inspired score from \”The Wolfman\”.
I\’ve never read Le Carre\’s novel, but I did see the Alec Guinness miniseries about a decade ago. I guess my memory of it is foggy as I have no clue what\’s going on in the trailer aside from \”there\’s a mole!\”.

I personally can\’t remember the Wolf Man score much, but the Alice one was dreadful.

The score is Danny Elfman\’s from \”The Wolfman.\” Weird how much shit talking we do on the site about Elfman\’s recent work and yet a bit of score of his from LAST YEAR gives Playlist bigwig Kevin \”chills\”… Hmmmm…
Alfredson is an amazing director. Could see that right away in Let The Right One In, and even just from this short trailer, it\’s obvious the dude could quit after this one and be considered one of the greats
