Of all the things that HBO have cancelled in recent years, “Looking” is the one we probably miss the most. Billed as a sort of gay “Girls” equivalent, the show, created by writer Michael Lannan and often directed by Andrew Haigh (“Weekend”), proved to be something richer and deeper than the comparison suggests, not just a copycat but its own woozy, beautiful beast.
But audiences didn’t flock to it, unfortunately, so HBO pulled the plug after the second season at the start of 2015. But thankfully, with a chance for the filmmakers to wrap up the story, so next month we’ll see “Looking: The Movie,” a feature-length follow-up directed by Haigh (hot off the fantastic “45 Years”), and once again starring Jonathan Groff, Frankie J. Alvarez, Murray Bartlett, Lauren Weedman and Russell Tovey.
It picks up some time after the series wrapped up, with Groff’s Patrick returning to San Francisco for the wedding of Agustin (Alvarez) and Eddie (Daniel Franzese) and being reunited with old friends and lovers. And from the trailer HBO debuted today, it looks to capture so much of what made the show special. There’s always the risk that something like this turns out to be fan service, but we trust Haigh and Lannan enough for that not to be the case. Take a look at the trailer above, and you can tune in to HBO at 10pm on Saturday July 23rd to watch it.
