Well, if the teaser was minor and haunting, the full length trailer for the Coen Brothers’ “True Grit” turns the volume way up and increases the number of gunshots. But no worries, the film still looks great and the new trailer is obviously a much more broadly appealing piece of marketing material.
In the new spot, we get far more time with all the principal players, and Matt Damon is still not quite convincing in his role as Texas Ranger La Beouf. That said, in the script we read, his character provided a lot of comic relief and ended up being one of our favorites so we’re still curious and hopeful. Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges look like a formidable duo as they hunt down Tom Chaney (a menacing Josh Brolin), the man who killed the young girl’s father. So yes, we’re still very excited for what should be a late Oscar season player.
The song in the trailer is Johnny Cash’s “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” and the film hits on Christmas Day.
It's been a long time since I've seen the original True Grit, but since this remake was announced I've been reading about how people didn't think it was a good film with some citing it wasn't like the novel. Well, I just finished reading the novel, so I watched the original's trailer on Youtube, and from all the footage and dialouge in it, it seems exactly like the novel. And from this new trailer, the Coens version also seems just like the novel. Maybe the original just seems dated.
I stopped watching half way through as to not spoil it any more…..looks good.
Sorry as to not give a more eloquent answer but fuck and yes.
cirkusfolk,
The original is very much like the novel but they changed the ending and few other things. The story, although featuring the same characters and situations, is also told more from the Rooster Cogburn POV than that of Mattie Ross. This last point is the biggest criticism of the original, that it essentially became a "John Wayne movie."
Also, the acting in the original seems very campy by todays standards…
Glen Campbell's bad acting and singing? Campy. Twenty-four year old Kim Darby playing a fourteen year old? Campy. John Wayne being John Wayne? You get the picture.
The Coen's version seems to have better performances and is darker in tone, IMO.
I don't know…from the trailer I think Bridges and Damon look pretty campy myself. And yes, Mattie Ross is the main character in the book, but damnit if she isn't annoying.
