On paper, there is no reason us not to like “Our Idiot Brother.” The cast is stacked with actors we really like — Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Rashida Jones, Emily Mortimer, Adam Scott, Steve Coogan, T.J. Miller, Kathryn Hahn, Hugh Dancy and Janet Montgomery — and seems tailor made to win us over, and while we didn’t love this new trailer wholeheartedly, we think there is more than meets the eye.
Our man at Sundance James Rocchi, whose taste is pretty much on point, called the film “Apatovian, pleasureable & a real surprise” and that sort of nuance is kind of missing here in the trailer, which seems to be going to broader laughs. At any rate, everyone looks finely tuned for their roles. Paul Rudd seems perfectly at ease as everyone’s best friend and lover of life who gets mixed up in the woes of his family, but Adam Scott walks away with the entire trailer thanks to a single line, perfectly read. As for the rest of the cast we only get brief moments with them and the movie hints at the kind of message we’re pretty sure we’ve seen a million times, but once again, we’d wager (or at least hope) there is more underneath the surface.
We’ll see when “Our Idiot Brother” hits theaters on August 26th. Check out the full trailer below.
How many of the women in this movie has Paul Rudd played a romantic lead to? All but Emily Mortimer it seems.
And him with Adam Scott, I\’m there. Fantasy come true.
Alex:

Trailer wasn\’t that funny but Paul Rudd and Adam Scott in the same movie? The likability score of this movie is already through the roof.
