Stop if you’ve heard this one before from a Woody Allen movie: a man faces an existential crisis and has lost all perspective on life’s meaning until a lovely breath of fresh air walks into his life. Yep, welcome to the director’s latest "Irrational Man," and with a Cannes Film Festival premiere on the horizon, the first trailer is here.
The first thing that’s noticeable right off the bat is that in his fifty collaborations with the filmmaker, cinematographer Darius Khondji hasn’t lost a sun-dappled step. This looks damn gorgeous. Of course, it doesn’t hurt when Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone are your leads, with both delivering the expected beats from Woody Allen’s prototypical characters. The real surprise? Parker Posey, who looks like the secret MVP in this one, sliding right into the dialogue patter perfectly.

Also featuring Jamie Blackley, "Irrational Man" opens on July 17th.
50 collaborations between director Allen and cinematigrapher Khondji. Really? Not true. Allen hasn\’t even directed 50 features, let alone worked with Khondji that many times.
50 collaborations with each other for Allen and Khondji? Really? Not true. Where\’d you come up with that number? Woody hasn\’t even directed 50 features.
Am I crazy, but IMDb just has this listed as Khondji\’s FIFTH collaboration. Not to say that Woody couldn\’t have 50 collabs, he\’s been working for a long while
It looks like Magic in the Moonlight again only with a philosophy professor and a student. Pass…
Every leading man in a Woody Allen movie is Woody Allen. Joaquin doesn\’t make a convincing Woody, his delivery is all wrong. This looks like it has more substance than some of Woody\’s more recent efforts, and I adore everyone in the cast, but I\’m not sure how this will land with audiences. How many "older man/younger woman" films can he make before the audience simply refuses to watch the same story being told in different locations?
Looks really good. Joaquin Phoenix has been amazing in everything he has been in recently and this looks like no exception.
Woody Allen has lost me. His characters don\’t sound like real people anymore, like teenage actors putting on an Ibsen play.
Has Emma Stone ever looked more beautiful? Watched the trailer thrice just to look at her face.
