He’s got two Oscars on his mantle, so how about a third? Christoph Waltz will have his shot this Christmas with Tim Burton‘s "Big Eyes," and the first trailer for this oddball, art world legal drama is here.
The actor co-stars with Amy Adams (herself a five time Oscar nominee) in a story about Walter and Margaret Keane, two darlings of the art scene of the 1950s whose marriage and partnership disintegrated when the latter accused the former of taking the credit for her work. The matter went to court, with the two compelled to paint in real time to prove once and for all who deserved recognition as such. Here’s the official synopsis:
Directed and produced by Tim Burton, BIG EYES is based on the true story of Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz), who was one of the most successful painters of the 1950s and early 1960s. The artist earned staggering notoriety by revolutionizing the commercialization and accessibility of popular art with his enigmatic paintings of waifs with big eyes. The truth would eventually be discovered though: Keane’s art was actually not created by him at all, but by his wife, Margaret (Amy Adams). The Keanes, it seemed, had been living a lie that had grown to gigantic proportions. BIG EYES centers on Margaret’s awakening as an artist, the phenomenal success of her paintings, and her tumultuous relationship with her husband, who was catapulted to international fame while taking credit for her work.
"I admire Walter Keane for his marketing. For being able to sustain that scam for so long and how he managed to climb the ladder from literally the bottom. I am not completely against him at all," Waltz told USA Today about his character. "She was part of it. She knew, that changes everything."
The first trailer for the movie is below. "Big Eyes" opens on Christmas Day.
DRYER when was Tim Burton doing work taht was not corporate? If you consider Edward Scissorhands to be the height of left field movie making then go to bed please.
I\’m not the biggest fans of his recent movies but I think this film looks great. I\’m surprised I actually really want to see it.
Now that I\’ve seen the trailer, I don\’t need to see the movie. Again an trailer that tells the whole story.
Wow…can not WAIT to see this!
I honestly disagree. This is a breathe of fresh air on Tim Burton work. That whole Bonham Carter-Depp-pseudo gothic stuff was getting old.
I don\’t think that Burton\’s choice to restrain his signature style means that he doesn\’t have it any more. However, this does look pretty schmaltzy. Hoping that the trailer is a honeyed whitewash of something a little darker and more truly Burton.
This looks like a truly embarrassing effort by everyone involved. What a mess!
Oh my God, Tim Burton has done it again after quite a long time! The trailer is incredible and Amy Adams seems to give a performance worthy of multiple awards. You go, Amy!
Are these performances really Oscar-worthy? Maybe, but Adams looks anemic, while Waltz is funny. Moreover it\’s weird that The Weinstein Company didn\’t show this movie at the fall festivals.
A lame trailer, but I see a really good movie in there. I can\’t wait for this now.
I wouldn\’t dismiss this movie at all but the Weinstein Company have become a real predictable marketing bore.
garbage. plain and simple.
@Dryer Since when can people not broaden their horizons and try something different. You clearly don\’t know his style as much as you think you do because I saw a lot of Tim just in the trailer.
Honestly, this looks like it could be a decent film, but with a really terrible trailer.
This looks amazing. You both are on crack.
Yikes, looks like a Lifetime movie. Tim really is done
Sad that Burton has homogenized his work and become such a shill to the corporate culture that he doesn\’t even a signature style to present anymore. RIP Tim Burton
