A movie we first crossed our fingers for at Cannes, and then hoped would pop up on the fall festival circuit, Thomas Vinterberg‘s adaptation of Thomas Hardy‘s classic "Far From The Madding Crowd" wasn’t seen in Venice, Telluride, Toronto, or anywhere else in 2014. It’s a bit curious considering the filmmaker has rounded up a great cast for this period drama, his followup to the acclaimed "The Hunt." Whatever the reason it side-stepped those glamorous events, the first trailer is here, and the film certainly looks beautiful.
Carey Mulligan, Michael Sheen, Matthias Schoenaerts, Tom Sturridge, and Juno Temple star in this tale centering on the fetching Bathsheba Everdene (Mulligan) who is courted by three men: Gabriel Oak (Schoenaerts), a shepherd; Sergeant Troy (Sturridge), a handsome soldier; and William Boldwood (Sheen), a farm owner. Tragedy looms in the distance and their lives and desires clash and collide.
"Far From The Madding Crowd" opens on May 1, 2015. Watch below.
It looks good. I\’ve heard Vinterberg took his time finishing it so that\’s probably why it missed the fall festivals.
Sorry, I was under the impression that it only opened in one territory before Cannes. Which wouldn\’t have prevent a competition slot. But in this case you\’re right, definitely no Cannes. Makes a Berlinale return for Vinterberg all the more possible, though.
It opens May 1st, Cannes is mid-May, so no, won\’t be screening there.
Don\’t you think it\’ll be at Cannes 2015?
Carey Mulligan FTW! will definitely check this one out
This looks great!
