“Well, I know it’s going to happen,” Robert Downey Jr. said last year about his chances of eventually winning an Oscar. “I, personally, would be shocked if we went to the end of the tape now and I didn’t have at least one….Because I’m young enough, and I’m running down being occupied with these kind of genre movies, close enough. Even the next thing [‘The Judge‘] we’re doing with the missus, I’m so confident about it. It’s the best script the studio has; it’s the best thing I’ve read in years.” So, will this film bring RDJ the Oscar gold he’s chasing?
Well, the first trailer for the film has arrived and it’s swinging for the fences. David Dobkin (“Wedding Crashers“) directs this one that presents a hodge podge of genres, following a slick, unlikeable, big city lawyer, who has to return home for the funeral of his mother, only to find out his father is accused of murdering her. So, father/son drama, procedural and heartwarming dramedy all at once? Kinda seems that way, and it’ll be a tricky balance of tones to pull off. That said, the supporting cast, which includes Robert Duvall, Vera Farmiga and Billy Bob Thornton, couldn’t be better.
“The Judge” arrives on October 10th. Watch below.
Anyone know what the three songs they used in the trailer are?
Looks like a winner to me.
I saw this hyped on ET last night, with Oscar buzz already, but it reminds me of Absence of Malice or The Verdict, and those were made in 1981. I don't see this getting any nominations, it already looks dated and hokey. I love RDJ and Robert Duvall but this is not a movie I'm interested in seeing at all.
It might have been "Erin Brockovich" on the page, but then they picked a director.
Looks plastic, glib, and lightweight across the board, right down to that precocious Disney pixie they cast as his daughter.
Too bad. I'd be up to see the darker "Prisoners"/"Jagged Edge-y" drama depicted in the poster.
Swinging for the middle age men with daddy issues awards.
So I see the poster first and think: "Oh cool, Robert Downey Jr. is doing a serious thriller/drama." Then I watched the trailer (without reading anything you wrote) and I could not see the connection between that "serious" poster and the eye-roll-inducing-vanilla-inspirational-bs trailer. Skipping it!
Only problem with "swinging for the fences" here is that it's from the director of THE CHANGE-UP and FRED CLAUS.
It looks like an okay movie. It's a shame that it's been given such a schmaltzy trailer. I think it's time to outlaw this Magnetic Zeros-style many-indie-voices-singing-lalala-in-an-inspirational-crescendo death knell. It's sent too many movies of average health to a premature grave.
Lord this is swinging for oscar feces
Are you sure this isn't a Tropic Thunder 2 trailer?
