Got a Tip?

Watch: First Trailer For Stephen Daldry’s ‘Trash’ Starring Rooney Mara

Trash, Rooney MaraHere’s the deal: if you see a trailer this week for a prestige, awards contender-seeming movie, the chances are you’ll likely see it somewhere on the fall festival slate. And so, even though we weren’t quite sure where Stephen Daldry‘s "Trash" would fit on the calendar, it’s done, in the can, a trailer is here, and now you can see if the Oscar race is being shaken up.

Based on the book by Andy Mulligan, with a script from Richard Curtis ("Love Actually," "About Time") and starring Rooney Mara, Martin Sheen and Wagner Moura along with newcomers Rickson Tevez, Eduardo Luis and Gabriel Weinstein, the story concerns three street kids who survive by picking through a mostly human waste-filled garbage dump on the outskirts of a large city. One day, one of them finds a small leather bag with a wallet with some money and an ID card, a folded-up map, and a key. A police officer offers them a reward for this parcel but that makes them realize something’s amiss, and they decide to hang on to it. That decision puts them in danger and they’re soon on a mission, having to lie, steal and fight against corrupt forces in both the corporate world and the government.

A glib comparison would be to call this "Slumdog Millionaire" meets "City Of God," but it certainly looks much grittier than we were expecting. No release date yet but the film opens in Brazil on October 9th. Watch below.
