Got a Tip?

Watch: First Trailer For ‘Secret In Their Eyes’ With Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman & Julia Roberts

Secret In Their EyesIf there is one movie that didn’t need a remake, it’s Juan José Campanella‘s Oscar winning "Secret In Their Eyes." And yet, one can’t deny that the combo of Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts, along with "Shattered Glass" writer/director Billy Ray is a compelling one. But the question still lingers of why this story needed to be retold, and what could be improved.

“I felt that as great as that movie is, and I literally mean great, I felt that it needed to be made into a slightly more muscular version of itself, and that just meant it needed a little bit more story and a couple of things I thought were sort of uniquely American touches to justify retelling the story,” Ray told EW. “I’m pretty confident we found all that.”

Whether or not it works, you can see for yourself in the first trailer. The story has been tweaked and now on a team of FBI investigators haunted by an unsolved case. Here’s the official synopsis:

A tight-knit team of rising FBI investigators – Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Jess (Julia Roberts), along with their District Attorney supervisor Claire (Nicole Kidman) – is suddenly torn apart when they discover that Jess’s teenage daughter has been brutally and inexplicably murdered.

Now, thirteen years later, after obsessively searching every day for the elusive killer, Ray finally uncovers a new lead that he’s certain can permanently resolve the case, nail the vicious murderer, and bring long-desired closure to his team.  No one is prepared, however, for the shocking, unspeakable secret that will reveal the enduring, destructive effects of personal vengeance on the human soul.

Interweaving past and present, this deeply layered mystery explores the murky boundaries between justice and revenge, and asks the question: how far would you go to right an unfathomable wrong?

"Secret In Their Eyes" opens on October 23rd. Does this look like a potential awards contender to you? Watch below.

  1. Man… I\’m so disappointed in this trailer. This was one of my most anticipated movies of the year because of the two female leads, two of my favorite actresses. I saw the Argentine version and fell in love with it and was so excited to see it remade but it looks like they\’ve gone and messed this one up just like they did with Abre Los Ojos and Vanilla Sky.

  2. Utter and total crap, how convinient, they get rid of the political subplot that made the Argentine film what it is, which is a great film, and no, race is not the same thing, and honestly people are getting tired of the race card being played in movies, muscle my ass! No remake can top the original, they just did their little American style thriller that looks and feels flat as a circle.

  3. One of the best films of the last decade remade so that aging oscar winning actresses can have meaty parts….Shameful. The original is perfect. No need for this nonsense. Watch the original. People can read subtitles right??

  4. There\’s enough stuff wrong with America that they could\’ve at least tried to add some subtext. I\’m not sure why Captain Phillips got so much love, but this looks bland and uninventive as well. Chiwetel Ejiofor deserves better!

  5. The political theme that was substituted was race. It\’s been said a few times by Billy Ray and statements made by STX that it\’s now about race in the US

  6. I saw the original Argentinian(?) version years ago and in that story there was a political theme connected it to that country\’s "dirty war." If that element has been removed and no similiar American political theme substituted, what\’s the point of remaking the film. Oh right, money.
