We’ve seen where the "Star Wars" saga goes next with J.J. Abrams‘ "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and now, we’re going to get the missing chapter of the story we thought we knew so well. Sure, in "Star Wars: A New Hope," we know that Leia put the plans for the Death Star inside of R2-D2, but how did she get them? Well, you’re about to find out in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."

Directed by Gareth Edwards ("Monsters," "Godzilla"), and featuring an outstanding cast of Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk (in an under wraps mo-cap turn), and Riz Ahmed, the ensemble will help tell the story of the events that happen before ‘A New Hope,’ chronicling the rebels’ escapade in stealing the plans for the Death Star that would prove to be so fateful. I dunno about you, I’m pretty stoked just to see Mendelsohn and Mikkelsen in the same movie.
But there’s even more talent to be found with DP Greig Fraser ("Foxcatcher," "Zero Dark Thirty," "Let Me In," "Bright Star") lensing the picture, and a score from Alexandre Desplat ("Birth," "The King’s Speech," "Argo," "The Grand Budapest Hotel").
So strap in and watch the first trailer below. "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" opens on December 16th.
I bet Jyn turns out to be Rey\’s mom. It stands to reason, given that the other proposed Star Wars Stories connect to characters in the Saga (Han Solo, Boba Fett) so why would Rogue One be wholly about people not in the Saga? The reveal won\’t come till Episode 8 as Rogue One will conclude long, long before Rey could have been conceived, but I bet that\’s what they\’re doing here.
It\’s Rey\’s mom
Considering the talent involved, this looks pretty underwhelming. It doesn\’t look cheap exactly, but it does have a "going through the motions", premium TV vibe. It was probably a mistake to go with a second female protagonist. That just looks like a big FU to the male nerd base that stuck with the series through 3 catastrophic Lucas prequels and Abrams serviceable rainbow coalition relaunch. I guess the boys will have to settle for the Boba Fett series while Disney works through it\’s warrior princess issues.
And is it just me, or does Jones battle armor in the last shot look like she just stepped off the "Hunger Games" set…
Wtf is going on with Mark Hamill in the little interview after the trailer? He looks like he\’s going to kill someone
Alexandre Desplat is weirdly getting me more excited for this than anything.
Finally, the gritty Star Wars movie that nobody was looking for.
At least there\’s no bloody light sabers.
I guess because this is a DISNEY production we\’re going to overlook just how similar this feels to The Force Awakens.
I wonder what the response would be if WB or Zack Snyder directed this film.
looks quite good I suppose?
it\’s a lie! bloody propaganda! we all know it was Kyle Katarn who stole Death Star plans in Dark Forces!
