Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a bunch of young people armed with video cameras try to summon ghosts and then a bunch of things go wrong. Sound familiar? And people wonder why we get cynical sometimes. Anyway, even from the film’s title, "Demonic" basically asserts that it’s not really going to try too hard, but in case you’re wondering what James Wan ("The Conjuring," "Saw") has associated his name with lately, the first trailer for the horror is here.
Two actors who deserve much better, Frank Grillo and Maria Bello, star in the movie that rolls out the usual genre tricks: jump scares, people grabbed by invisible forces, an "incident" from long ago that has some bearing on the scary current events, ghosts always standing behind people….this is practically a Mad Libs of a horror movie. All that said, audiences have shown they don’t mind a good formula if it scares the bejeezus out of them, so who knows, this could be another sleeper hit.
