Watch: First Trailer For James Gray’s ‘The Lost City Of Z’ Starring Charlie Hunnam & Robert Pattinson

Lost City Of Z (James Gray)

Director James Gray (“Two Lovers,” “The Immigrant”) had been trying to get “The Lost City Of Z” made for several years. And while his big star, Brad Pitt, dropped out a long time ago, his production company Plan B stayed on board through many of its ups and downs and finally shepherded the movie to the screen. There had been other iterations, with Benedict Cumberbatch once attached to star, too.

But the movie ultimately stars “Pacific Rim” and “Crimson Peak” lead Charlie Hunnam, plus a supporting cast that includes Robert Pattinson, Sienna Miller, and Tom Holland. And so when it rains, it pours. Yesterday, Holland (who is also the new “Spider-Man” in the Marvel films) posted a first look of the film on yesterday, and today, the first official trailer — a sales version — has surfaced (though it’s been quietly online for a month, apparently).

Set during the 1920s, “The Lost City Of Z” centers on the legendary British explorer Percy Fawcett (Hunnam), who ventured into the Amazon jungle in search of a fabled civilization and never returned. Robert Pattinson co-stars as his fellow explorer Henry Costin, and Sienna Miller plays his his wife Nina Fawcett.

Described as an action-adventure, in Gray’s hand this new sales trailer is somewhat reminiscent of “Apocalypse Now,” and given the filmmaker is an avowed Francis Ford Coppola fan, you’ll probably see more of that influence in the movie itself (as well as that of David Lean, whom Gray said was an major inspiration on the film) via the cinematography of the great Darius Khondji (who shot “The Immigrant”).

Recent reports said “The Lost City Of Z” would not be ready until the fall, so it could turn up at the Venice International Film Festival instead. There’s obviously no release date or distributor yet; a festival bow will have to come first. But with the package of Gray, this cast, and Pitt’s Plan B, securing a distributor shouldn’t be difficult. Check out the new sales trailer below.

  1. Looking forward to this. Trailer is beautiful and I\’m convinced that Hunnam is meant to be a big time movie star. I just hope he can maintain an accent. He\’s from England yet his English accent almost sounds like he\’s American and trying to do an English accent? He\’s a good actor though – so hopefully, this movie pushes him into the next level of A-listdom.

  2. You are obsessed with Rob his life and his GF Twigs. you Kstew stans are responsible for racist hate Twigs gets because you want to see Rob being asked about it. You are the trolls on Gossip Cop board spreding hatred and lies about him. Move on. Rob doesn\’t have PR team to write PR pieces about the hate he faces because of you. The movie looks fantastic and it\’s truthful to the book,at least I can say it after watching a trailer.

  3. LOL talk about pot calling kettle black. You are more obsessed with KS than her own fans. Remember when you said she was just a piece of furniture in CoSM? Talk about foolish comments. 😉

  4. No, Pattinson creates a character with his voice, accent, walk, body movements–he uses all the skills a talented actor has to make the character come to life. He doesn\’t just grow a beard and play himself in film after film. He didn\’t have a beard in The Rover, he barely had hair, and he got rave reviews for disappearing into the character he created. He didn\’t take the easy route, chasing box office with pretty boy romantic leads. He\’s a real actor and he\’s been consistently demonstrating that in his last seven films. Isn\’t it really time for Kristen Stewart fans to move on and stop making foolish comments all over the internet? He hasn\’t seen her for the past 3 years, they\’ve moved on. Give it a try.

  5. Impressive trailer for The Lost City of Z, looks like an awards contender come Oscar time. Hunnmm looks very strong in the lead and Pattinson again proves he\’s a chameleon, disappearing into another character, almost unrecognizable. Gray is such a stickler for authenticity, you can feel the excitement and danger in this trailer. Looks like we\’re in for a wild ride in uncharted territories, can\’t wait. Looks like another winner from Brad Pitt\’s Plan B.
