From the top of the sports world, to tabloid-worthy flameout, to an interview with Oprah Winfrey—Lance Armstrong has certainly lived a life and then some. From a hero to a pariah, few scandals in the past few years have resonated with the public quite like the revelation that the beloved cyclist was doping. Outed by his teammates and forever tainting the Livestrong brand, documentarian Alex Gibney has gotten up close and personal with Armstrong for his next film.
After hitting Venice and Toronto, the not subtly named “The Armstrong Lie” is coming with the first trailer arriving to take you inside the flick. And as you might guess, it’s a profile of Armstrong with full participation from the former cyclist, whom Gibney had originally sought to make a movie about before the scandal broke. And reconnecting with him, gives folks a firsthand account from the man himself. But does it offer up anything new? According to our review from the Lido, not really: “If you followed the scandal closely over the years, it’ll likely feel like going over old ground. But for all its flaws, the film offers as compelling and fair a summary of the case and the man for those less well-versed in the tale as you could ask for from a documentary.”
Still, there are few stories like this one and if you didn’t track the story and all its ins and outs, this might be a good way to take it all in. “The Armstrong Lie” opens on November 8th.
