It remains to be seen whether Jamie Dornan can forge out a career beyond Christian Grey. Though he broke out thanks to sinister TV show “The Fall” (soon to get a third season), he became instantly associated with his character in sexy-times mega-hit “50 Shades Of Grey,” which made $500 million worldwide and has two sequels in the works, one currently filming.
Dornan has a couple of projects on the way, including WW2 drama “Anthropoid,” which premieres at Karlovy Vary this week, but one we’ve been intrigued about is “The 9th Life Of Louis Drax,” which has finally debuted a trailer after a long route to the screen.
An adaptation of a 2004 novel by Liz Jensen, the project was initially acquired by Miramax for Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack, but stalled when both great filmmakers passed away. Minghella’s son Max (star of “The Social Network” among others) went on to adapt the book himself, and the film finally shot, with Minghella’s “Horns” director Alexandre Aja helming, at the end of 2014. Sarah Gadon, Aaron Paul, Barbara Hershey and Oliver Platt also star.
The clip suggests something rather distinctive, following a doctor (Dornan) investigating a young boy whose life has been full of dangerous accidents, culminating in a fall off a cliff that’s put him into a coma. It seems pleasingly difficult to put into a genre box from the trailer, though whether it works in practice remains to be seen. Still, we’re rooting for Minghella, whose work we’ve always liked, and for Aja, who’s an interesting filmmaker. The film will hit theaters on September 2nd. Take a look below, with some new images.
