“We bought the rights to the book that tells the story of the trial, but our film is not really about that, so we are always a bit wary of even saying that,” director Michael Winterbottom told THR last summer about his upcoming drama based on American journalist Barbie Latza Nadeau‘s book “Angel Face: Sex, Murder and the Inside Story of Amanda Knox.” “Our film is actually about losing a daughter, losing someone close to you; why are we so interested in violence and why are we not more interested in love.” Well, it’s a nice claim to make but based on this first teaser trailer/promo reel for the movie, the trial takes center stage.
Starring Daniel Bruhl, Kate Beckinsale and Cara Delevingne, if these thirty seconds are anything to go by, “The Face Of An Angel” is very much about the trial of Amanda Knox (renamed here), and certainly the movie now has a bit of extra buzz thanks to the young American being convicted again by an Italian court of murdering her roommate (she spent four years in prison before the original verdict was overturned). The case made headlines around the world, and shone an intense light on the Italian criminal justice system, and all the while Knox has vehemently denied having anything to do with the death of her former flatmate. No release date yet, but this project is on the sales floor at the European Film Market in Berlin.
So, is this movie a salacious cash-in or, as Winterbottom says, something with a bit more in-depth? Watch below. [Variety]
From what I'm hearing, the film is ambivalent about the guilt or innocence of Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito. WHY? There is no question here and therefore there shoujld be no ambivalence. Anyone who thinks logically, has done any research and has looked at the evidence, as well as a majority of the international community of expert criminal and scientific investigators have publicly declared that Amanda and Raffaele are completely and totally innocent and were shockingly victimized by the Perugian authorities as well as the tabloid press Rudy Guede sexually assaulted and murdered Meredith Kercher all by himself…he didn't need any help. There is no physical evidence, no circumstantial evidence and no motive connecting either Amanda or Raffaele to this horrendous and tragic crime. After this particularly brutal and bloody crime, her murderer has served only 7 years and is eligible for work release. How does any ambivalence as to her killer honor the memory of Meredith Kercher? I assume Mr. Winterbottom did his homework before even considering making a film based on this case. I also assume Mr. Winterbottom is a reasonably intelligent and perceptive man. Therefore I cannot comprehend why he would not make it perfectly clear that Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito are completely innocent…the morally and ethically right thing to do in (or any other) film on this case.
I will be interested to see how this turns out. Regardless of it's claim that it leaves us with no opinion on the murder this is bull. The book that Winnterbottom"loosely" bases the movie off of was originally called, "Amanda Knox, the TRUE story of student killer Amanda Knox". I wrote to the author, Barbie Nadeau, and suggested she change the name of her book to "I was Wrong" after the appeal which exonerated Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito. I told her she could get a whole new bundle of $$. She did change the title of the book to make her sound a bit more neutral but the contents are the same. Nadeau has been known by all of the legitimate people involved as the mouth of the Prosecution, a serious conspiracy theorists, and a extreme far right Catholic. This is a joke. She's a yellow Tabloid journalist. So just know that it's a movie about one of "the" main Tabloid writers. I guess it's all about money in the end for some people. Good luck with that.
Excellent piece. Especially enjoyed all the clips we've never seen before, especially Magnini. Please note: While the court said it was 'unlikely' that Rudy acted alone, forensics experts (even on the Prosecution side) have all testified that it was entirely POSSIBLE that Rudy acted alone. Unforgivably, the blood-sucking media wants it to go on and on and on while there is still more $$$ to be made. Disgusting!
This is going to be twice better than 9 Songs. Beckinsale does nothing but sxck cxcks the whole time. I hear the story has a chilling climax: Amanda Knox fxcks herself with a cucumber. Winterbottom is amazing. No one can make great psychological thrillers like Mr Winterbottom. I hear Oscar calling!
Salacious cash-in. Winterbottom lied, during filming, claiming he wasn't doing the Amanda story. He is a dishonest hack.
