Update: 2/10: New poster below.
Update 12/20: Finally, the full length trailer. Watch below.
Original story 12/19: “…singularity, is a theoretical moment in time when artificial intelligence will have progressed to the point of a greater-than-human intelligence, radically changing civilization, and perhaps human nature. Since the capabilities of such an intelligence may be difficult for a human to comprehend, the technological singularity is often seen as an occurrence (akin to a gravitational singularity) beyond which the future course of human history is unpredictable or even unfathomable.” So goes the the first couple lines of the Wikipedia entry on the subject of technological singularity, and the question is: can Wally Pfister turn that thematic material into a big screen, mainstream success in “Transcendence“?
Well, here’s the first teaser trailer to see how he did. Starring Johnny Depp, the actor takes the role of Dr. Will Caster, whose creation of sentient machine puts him at risk from anti-technology extremists who inadvertently set the researcher on a dangerous path towards, you guessed it, transcendence. It’s a fascinating premise by Jack Paglen from his 2012 Black List script, and while Pfister is making his feature debut, he isn’t too far away from his frequent collaborator Christopher Nolan who is executive producing this one.
Thoughts? Share ’em below. Co-starring Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Paul Bettany, Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy, “Transcendence” happens on April 18, 2014. Watch below plus two more teasers featuring more narration and less footage!
Where have all the new ideas gone ? This idea has been done & re – done numerous times before in movies & TV.
So easy to recycle old ideas than to think of something fresh & original.
It makes sense; rival company is fighting Dr. Will's invention (completely natural line), then Dr. Will is shot (expected, something has to slow him down, natural). The tempo – action orientated or not – is just right for the story line. Then Dr. Will grows stronger as the A.I (same people who helped have to device a way to stop him). The movie is just "set".
It looks completely ridiculous but I'm sure it will rake in the dollars, Transformers style.
This looks very 90s.
The trailer made it look very silly, but it has a great cast and Black List script, so I'll give it a chance.
This is literally an X-Files episode.
You can tell this is going to have tons of coverage and hype and then be thoroughly bland and disappointing. Depp is always a bad sign to me anyway.
…Paul Bettany here looks little bit like younger Lance Henriksen. Transcendence?
this does look really silly

Do not look promising.
I get it: Kate Mara and friends are bad, but after the 2/3 of the movie Depp becomes the real bad MF.
"From Director Wally Pfister" LOL did anyone else giggle at that. This guy hasn't directed anything so far but this cheap Lawnmower Man remake.
And now Interstellar isn't the worst teaser of the year…this is.
Best teaser, no like Interstellar. Sparrow's Maths
I like The Terminator too.
Matrix IV: The Beginning
I am excited one of my movies I am eager to see next year.
