Oscar voters have made clear again and again that they love movies about movies. From Best Picture victories for “Argo” and “The Artist” to Bryan Cranston’s Best Actor nod for “Trumbo” last year, films that talk about the power of film have proven consistently popular with awards bodies. Which means that “Their Finest” could be a dark horse possibility to watch with the Academy.
The British pic, based on the novel “Their Finest Hour And A Half” by Lissa Evans, tells the story of the making of WW2 propaganda film about Dunkirk, the quirky cast and crew, and a romance between the two screenwriters making it, played by Gemma Arterton and Sam Claflin. Also starring Bill Nighy, Jeremy Irons, Jack Huston, Jake Lacy and more, it marks the return of director Lone Scherfig of “An Education” fame.
The film debuted in Toronto last night to a very enthusiastic response, and if a distributor steps up, could be one to sneak into the awards conversation this year. And you can get your first look at the film with a clip that debuted over at EW. Take a look below, and stay tuned for our review of the movie.
