With Will Smith bowing out for "Independence Day: Resurgence," Roland Emmerich has decided to mix a little of the old with a little of the new. Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner are returning to the alien invasion blockbuster, while up-and-comers Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Liam Hemsworth are the new school players for the sequel. And today our first taste has arrived.
The premise for the followup is pretty straightforward: Earth may have defeated the creatures from another world last time, but the aliens are back, and bringing more technology and better weaponry (and probably one fatal flaw in their plan that humans will be able to exploit to win the day). Here’s the official synopsis:
We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
"Independence Day: Resurgence" opens on June 24, 2016. Watch below.
