A.I. at the movies is suddenly a hot topic with Neill Blomkamp‘s "Chappie" and Alex Garland‘s "Ex Machina" around the corner, and The Weinstein Company want to be part of the conversation. First released in 2011 internationally, the studio is now bringing "Eva" to theaters stateside and the first U.S. trailer has arrived.
Directed by Kike Maíllo, the movie is set in an alternate, slightly more futuristic present day where the challenge for science doesn’t seem to be creating artificial intelligence, but emotional intelligence. But as always, playing God has its consequences. Here’s the official synopsis:
The year 2014. Humans live along with machines. Alex, a renowned cybernetic engineer, returns to Santa Irene to carry out a very specific mission for the Robotic Faculty: the creation of a child robot. During his ten-year absence, life has moved on for his brother David and Lana, who got her life back together after his departure. Alex’s routine is altered in an unexpected way by Eva, Lana and David’s amazing daughter. She is a very special, charismatic little girl. She and Alex have a special connection from the moment they meet. They set out on a journey together, which will bring them to a revelatory end.
"Eva" will open in limited release on March 13th. Check out the trailer below.
Wow! I\’ve seen Eva a number of times on YouTube. Awesome that it\’s coming to the U.S. Daniel Bruhl is great in everything he is in.
We enjoyed \’Eva\’ a few years ago in Spain. A great piece of retro-futurism (tomorrow never seemed so Seventies).
It\’s so weird when US audiences are just getting to see something the rest of the world has been able to since 2011.
Usually it\’s the other way around: US audiences get to see stuff first.
Except superhero movies… Strangely, those have been premiering about a week in advance in non-US markets as of lately.
Not forgetting movies like AUTOMATA, I-ROBOT etc – of them all, I can\’t wait for EX-MACHINA. Alex Garland = Brilliant.
