Watch: Christoph Waltz Takes A Walk Through The Future In First Clip From Terry Gilliam’s ‘The Zero Theorem’

While the Venice, Telluride and TIFF overlap this year seems to be pretty severe, this is one very high-profile movie that is only stopping at the Lido without plans to come stateside just yet—Terry Gilliam‘s “The Zero Theorem.” The director’s latest premiered this morning, and while the rest of us will have to wait for the movie to make its journey stateside, an intriguing taste has arrived.

The first clip from the movie has dropped and it gives us a pretty good glimpse at the future world Gilliam has concocted for this film. Starring Christoph Waltz, he plays Qohen, an eccentric man waiting for a mysterious phone call while also working on solving the titular the Zero Theorem that will prove existence is meaningless. He rarely ventures out of doors, but in this sequence, we see the imaginative Gilliam putting together a media and advertising saturated world where superheroes are now a religion (keep your eyes peeled).

“It might not be a return to form…but it’s a lot better than what we’ve had from Gilliam in the last decade, and we sincerely hope there’s plenty more to come,” we wrote in our review, and it certainly seems Gilliam hasn’t lost a step. And note, the rounded corners of the frame are intentional.

“That fact that we’re shooting on film is already a retro idea. I wanted to get on film what you used to see in old, silent movies where you could see the entire full frame, including the edge of the gate so those rounded corners are there,” Gilliam told Screen Daily. Take a look below.
