Chris Evans may have spoken out of turn. Having played Captain American four times now and set to do so three more times at least (‘Captain America: Civil War’ and two ‘Avengers: Infinity Wars’ movies), the actor seemed a little tired of his contracted duties for Marvel a year or so back. He had vowed to take a break from acting once his ‘Captain America’ contracts were up (circa 2019/2020) and focus on directing. Evans has since recanted, suggesting he may not retire early or even abandon the Captain America role, but he wasn’t kidding about moving behind the camera. Evans unveiled his directorial debut, “Before We Go” at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival —the film co-stars himself and Alice Eve, late from “Star Trek: Into Darkness” and recent collaborations with Neil LaBute.

A romantic dramedy, “Before We Go” centers on a young woman in New York City who is robbed on her way to take the train back to Boston. Lost in the dark underbelly of New York at night, she meets a dashing young man who helps her get through the night. Yep, it’s kind of a 24-hour, all-in-one-night meet cute movie: here’s our review from TIFF last year. The official synopsis is thus:
BEFORE WE GO, the directorial debut of Chris Evans, follows the journey of two strangers stuck in New York City for the night. Starting as convenient acquaintances, the two soon grow into each other’s most trusted confidants when a night of unexpected adventure forces them to confront their fears and take control of their lives.
A two-hander mostly featuring Evans and Eve in almost all the scenes, “Before We Go” is set to land in theaters on August 21st and hits VOD on July 21st. Watch the first trailer below.
Great. Another vanity project from an average actor turned director. This movie is stale, dry and unnecessary…just like Chris Evans\’ career outside of Marvel. A director can elevate a script for sure but the fact he chose a bad screenplay to direct in the first place is kind of awful and indicates a lot about his baseline level of taste. It\’s already available on VOD so I gave it a go just out of curiosity but it was like watching a bad version of Before Sunrise or Like Crazy if you removed the charismatic talented actors and clever dialogue. And why was the camera work so shaky and the music used so boring? Alice Eve is insufferable as usual. The story drags from time to time. Bland characters don’t help much either. The cinematography was nice though (thanks to John Guleserian).
Alice Eve is always exciting & adorable on-screen.
Just saw the trailer. It looks like a terrible bland movie. I\’m gonna pass.
Why do these airhead actors feel the need to \’direct\’ a movie? All that results is this garbage.
Well, nice poster art, even if the movie is lousy (per your review)
