There is one undeniable truth about Jason Reitman's upcoming "Young Adult," and that is Charlize Theron is god damn unstoppable. As a ghost writer for a young adult series of books that closely resemble "Sweet Valley High," she is bitter, depressed, delusional, and obsessive. And you cannot help but love her. Paramount has just released three new clips from the movie, which opens in limited release next week before expanding the week after, and the clips truly capture the toxic/tart nature of the movie (and the utter brilliance of Theron's performance). You can watch all three below.
In the first clip, Theron is looking for a dress in a small town department store, unimpressed with the selection and unaware of how off putting her behavior is to the middle-aged sales assistant. We've seen this one already in a couple of spots for the movie, but here it's slightly longer and just as acidic. In the second, we see Theron interacting with her former flame Buddy (played by the Nite Owl himself Patrick Wilson), explaining that a character in her YA novels is based on him, even though "we're supposed to stick to this bible," and seeing, for the first time, his infant son. In the third, and maybe the most funny and biting, clip, Theron is back at her parents house, explaining how much she's been seeing of her old boyfriend. The joke about the wedding photo was one of our favorites from the whole movie.
Watch these now and go see "Young Adult" when it opens next week.
I think Young Adult is gonna be one of my favorites of all time, not only due to being a typical kidult as myself. I think Charlize Theron is kinda lucky to portrait characters created by hilarious (really) Diablo Cody, alongside her acting talents. Especially the clip "Wedding Photo", feel like the gang of cool actors creating the darkly funny ambience well by understanding the script.
