For a long while it seemed like Guillermo del Toro was attaching his name to everything he could, but nothing was really coming out of those announcements. He’d be attached to a film and then things would go dormant for a long time. “Pacific Rim” was one of those projects and the realization that the film’s release is about to arrive this week is hard to grasp. Thanks to the new clips, like the one below, the reality is quickly setting in.
In the below clip for “Pacific Rim”, Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) test whether or not they’re compatible robot pilots by hitting each other with sticks. The film opens this Friday on July 12th. We could provide you with a long winded synopsis, or you could just read our review right here.
While del Toro is obviously focused on this Friday’s release, he has a few other projects kicking around waiting for his attention. One of which is a cable show on FX based on a book he co-wrote with Chuck Hogan called “The Strain.” Carlton Cuse, the showrunner for the series, took to Twitter last night to announce that actor Sean Astin — yes, Rudy and Samwise Gamgee himself — had joined the cast. The show already carries an impressive assemble that includes Corey Stoll (“House of Cards”), Mia Maestro, John Hurt, and Kevin Durand. There’s no word yet on who Astin will be playing in the pilot which is to be directed by Guillermo del Toro.
“The Strain” tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of the Center for Disease Control, who has to put together an assorted batch of folks to help save humanity when a strain of vampirism breaks out. So yeah, it’s a vampire series but one with a Del Toro twist. [Deadline]
Interesting, not sure who he'll be, doesn't really seem a fit for Eph, (Stoll is perfect), Maybe Hurt in Flashbacks? if Hurt is Setrakian?
