Right now, The Playlist team is at a divide with "The Guilt Trip." Half of us think it will be a movie to avoid this upcoming holiday season, while the other half see lots of comic potential in the pairing of Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen. And at least for this writer, this first clip places me in the latter camp.
Yes, it's hitting the kind of notes we're expecting from this movie, but it's still kind of hard not to be charmed by this first peek. Penned by Dan Fogelman ("Crazy, Stupid, Love.") and directed by Anne Fletcher ("The Proposal," "27 Dresses"), the story follows an inventor who embarks on a road trip with his mother as he tries to sell his latest product, while he has a secret plan to reunite her with a long lost love. Thus, you can see why Streisand is surprised to be asked to spend time with her son, seemingly out of the blue.
Adam Scott, Yvonne Strahovski, Colins Hanks, Kathy Najimy and Dale Dickey are among the co-stars, which is another reason we're a bit curious for this one. We'll find out Christmas morning when this one opens. Watch below.
I prefer nice young Jewish actors like Logan Lerman, Natalie Portman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mila Kunis, or the half-Jewish Ezra Miller.
CANNOT WAIT!!!!!! 🙂 Hope she gets a Golden Globe nomination and possibly an oscar nomination!
I had the exact opposite reaction. All of the choices seem expected and obvious. Streisand seems to being delivering a rote "jewish mom" routine. The script is charming but no one seems to be bringing anything but the most cliched, lazy, barely passable read to the lines. On paper at least, the Streisand character had ShirleyMaclaine/"Terms of Endearment" potential. But if THIS is the scene that marketing chose to whet the appetite, how bad must the rest of it be. I would love to be able to say this looks good, but it doesn't.
I predict unkind reviews.
Since when in Barbra Streisand , Mel Brooks?
