Aside from “The Social Network” (which in a lot of ways isn’t really about social media, more the birth of it), we haven’t really had a great movie about social media. Could “Ingrid Goes West” be the first one? The story of an unstable young woman who becomes obsessed with an Instagram star, directed by Matt Spicer, won some raves at Sundance (here’s ours), and the more we see of it, the more we want to see it.
Starring Aubrey Plaza, Elizabeth Olsen, O’Shea Jackson and Billy Magnussen, the film hits in a few weeks, and distributors Neon have just dropped a filthy new red-band trailer for the movie featuring cursing, drugs, sex and all the other good stuff. The full synopsis is below, and you can see the film in LA and NYC from August 11th, and wider from August 25th.
Ingrid Thorburn (Aubrey Plaza) is an unhinged social media stalker with a history of confusing “likes” for meaningful relationships. Taylor Sloane (Elizabeth Olsen) is an Instagram-famous “influencer” whose perfectly curated, boho-chic lifestyle becomes Ingrid’s latest obsession. When Ingrid moves to LA and manages to insinuate herself into the social media star’s life, their relationship quickly goes from #BFF to #WTF. Built around a brilliantly disarming performance from Aubrey Plaza, Ingrid Goes West (winner of the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance) is a savagely hilarious dark comedy that satirizes the modern world of social media and proves that being #perfect isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
