After a string of biopics, a documentary, and a decent “Wall Street” sequel, it's clear Oliver Stone is ready to return to his special, sun-soaked universe — one where the violent atmosphere infuses every frame and its characters' swaggering personalities aren't too far behind. His newest film “Savages” has more than confirmed this with its exaggerated trailer, and now six new clips have arrived before the film opens just around the corner.
Giving a widespread look at the character dynamics, while also lending more room to scenes glimpsed previously, the clips (via JoBlo) nicely lay down the film's plot involving Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, and Blake Lively as the central love triangle. We also get some absolutely bug-eyed scene-chewing from Salma Hayek, Benicio del Toro, and John Travolta as the main antagonists, all of whom factor heavily in when Lively is kidnapped by a powerful Mexican drug cartel, prompting a full-on war between them and her love interests.
Stone appears to be firing one stage above all cylinders here, and it will be interesting to see if he is able to deliver on the insanity promised in the trailer. With Shane Salerno (“Armageddon”) teaming with the book's author Don Winslow's to takcle the script, it'll at least nail down the ridiculous action, but hopefully the narrative will be able to tread the surreal line that “Natural Born Killers” was able to pull off so well.
Anyway, judge for yourself if Stone is approaching a return to form, or simply cashing in on past stylistic success below, before “Savages” hits theatres on July 6th.
I liked the trailer but the more i see about this movie, the less enthusiastic i become. I hope the clips are just badly cut.
I actually want to watch this film. for me looks good…
Is it just me… or does this not look very good at all?
What is wrong with Lively's speech… why does she talk like that! I want to root for her but god she sounds awful.
It's a shame the film is tracking so poorly because Kitsch needs a hit BADLY and Stone could use one as well. Johnson will be fine because he's wildly talented and has Wright's film coming up/Kick Ass 2… and nothing needs to be said about Blake Lively.
wow travolta probably had a massive chub during the scene with the two guys
