Watch: 5 Baffling And Unnecessary Uses Of CGI In Movies

Star Wars PearNowadays, with reality television and instantaneous answers at our fingertips, it is often difficult to determine what exactly is real anymore, particularly in film. Computer-generated imagery, i.e. CGI, has become a staple in filmmaking and emerging tehcnology. I’m all for CGI when it’s appropriate. But sometimes using digital in film makes little sense.

The team at Dorkly has composed a list for their Today in Nerd History bit of the absolute worst examples of CGI. In other words, the picks are so completely ridiculous that someone just had to make a video listicle about them, and it’s our pleasure to share it with you. Pixelated poop? Couldn’t you just (gasp) use the real thing? Not to mention the extraneous pubic hair in a certain movie with the word "grey" in the title. And then of course, there’s George Lucas’ tinkering with "Star Wars."

  1. King Kong wasn\’t the best movie in the first place, but I\’ve always wondered about the scene where Jane is bonding with the mighty Kong, and she picks up three stones and begins to juggle to amuse him. This is a basic skill that I, and many other ten-year olds learned from about a week of practice. Maybe Naomi Watts was too busy, because they animated the stones she\’s juggling for Kong. I mean, what kind of an actor can\’t learn to juggle for a summer blockbuster of that size. People used to dance, sing and sword fight on screen, now they can\’t be bothered to juggle. Clowns!

  2. great video! hollywood needs to just accept that CGI doesn\’t work (unless, as in the case in Fincher and Nolan\’s best moments, it\’s extremely subtle).
Bring back stop-motion and animatronics and matte paintings!

  3. I\’m surprised they picked the digital dump in John Wick vs. the one in The Other Woman – not only was it unnecessary, it was horrendously unfunny as well. I\’m not above laughing at poop jokes/etc. but shoehorning them into a film instead of putting effort into actual jokes is just sad.
