Watch: 4-Minute ‘Deadpool’ VFX Reel Highlights The Movie Magic Behind The Merc With A Mouth

DeadpoolWell, now that reviews are starting to trickle in for the hotly anticipated “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” Zack Synder‘s film is already starting to take over the pop culture conversation, for better or worse (our review here). But first, one of the more surprising things about Synder’s film is that even with its March release date, it still isn’t the first blockbuster superhero flick of the year. “Deadpool” has managed to smash expectations and pocket $340 million domestically, earmarking its place on the list as one of the most successful movies of the year.

One of the key aspects to the success of such superhero flicks these days is the CG. As effects get better and better, audiences are becoming more adept at spotting any subpar work. And according to our ‘Batman v Superman’ review, despite its massive size and budget, Snyder’s film is pocked with some moments of absurdly bad CG; a problem the much smaller “Deadpool” didn’t struggle with.

To break down some of the solid VFX work from “Deadpool,” a new sizzle reel from Atomic Fiction has arrived. “‘Deadpool’ Visual Effects Breakdown” pulls back the delicate layers of the film’s opening car chase and action sequence, helping to highlight just how much visual wizardry goes into even a smaller scale superhero movie (the type where cities aren’t even being launched into the sky).

With “Ex Machina” taking the Best Visual Effects statue at the Oscar this year, it’s now safe to say that films with sub $100 million budgets can certainly compete with the grandeur of the summer tent poles, which is an exciting prospect for folks who appreciate when a movie does more than throw everything at the screen to see what sticks.
