After more than a decade being MIA at the multiplex, bona fide legend Warren Beatty is coming back with a new film. Though recent reports suggested he might’ve abandoned playing Howard Hughes, not to worry, as Beatty will indeed play the famed billionaire recluse in a movie that’s not quite about Hughes at all.
But let’s get some details out of the way first: Alden Ehrenreich and Lily Collins (replacing the long-attached Felicity Jones) will star in the flick, with Deadline adding that Annette Bening and Matthew Broderick are also expected to appear in the movie, with longtime Beatty pal Jack Nicholson also a (fingers crossed) possibility. As for the story, it will actually center on Hughes’ assistant (Ehrenreich) who falls and his romance with a young woman (Collins). However, previous plot details for the film suggested the woman would eventually fall for Hughes himself, though it’s unclear if that’s still the case. (Fun trivia: Andrew Garfield, Shia LaBeouf, Evan Rachel Wood and Rooney Mara were considered for the lead roles at one point.)
From a business end, New Regency and Brett Ratner (yep, that Brett Ratner) are producing the film, and while they’ll have U.S. rights, the director himself is hanging onto the foreign rights. Hmm. It’s also interesting to note that some of the film has actually already been shot, though full-blown production kicks off today.
As for when we’ll see it? Well, even if the budget is modest at $26.7 million, Beatty took his sweet time pulling it all together and something tells us he won’t be rushed in the editing room either. But hey, cameras are rolling, which is frankly fantastic, and we can’t wait to see how a Beatty drama plays, particularly in today’s cinematic climate.
Where is this new movie being filmed? I would like to meet mister Beatty and let him know about a photograph the I witnessed being taken of Mr. Hughes in Las Vegas.
Another DONE to DEATH franchise slum waste of time.
BEATTY, meanwhile, is looking more and more like
Globalist MAFIA 'hidden master' AVERELL HARRIMAN.
HARRIMAN basically RAN the Soviet Union througb
the EXTERMINATION 'friendly' 1930's and 40's.
He also did, probably more than MAO himself. to set up
EXTYERMIIST RED CHINA —-and, decades later,
the NIXON–MAO handover.
BEATTY should fid the GUTS to deliver the defining portrait of AVERELL HARRIMAN.
The role of his career AWAITS!
Warren s brilliant. He's heroic on and off screen.
Howard Hughes was a genius and Warren Beatty may join the club by selecting Hughes as background material for this new movie. I hope it gets nominated and wins an academy award. I wish I could be part of it.
Yes, fantastic news that Beatty is finally directing again after Bulworth! lets hope Nicholson has a significant supporting role to really get his teeth inti!
re the first post: an artist of Beatty's calibre will not be the slightest bit concerned with pandering to the current youth generation of lets face it..morons who have no understanding, knowledge or appreciation of Cinema as art. he knows what he is doing. Artists tend to. he knew what he was doing in '81 and in '98. and now too…making movies for grownups. ..
Audience expectations have shifted greatly in the decade and a half since Beatty last directed. It will be interesting to see if his directorial voice has evolved with the times or if he is stuck directing for an audience that no longer goes to the movies.
