Tom Hardy‘s “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” first linked the Sony-made spinoff to the Tom Holland films with a post-credit scene and was further linked in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” It looks like in an alternate universe that connection might have been stronger in the billon-dollar hit.
‘No Way Home’ co-writer Chris McKenna is detailing the bigger role Hardy’s Venom would have had if two other scenes hadn’t been scrapped from the final version of the superhero sequel.
While speaking with McKenna, Empire Magazine (via ComicBook) got the Marvel writer to talk about how Venom would have been part of the Statue of Liberty fight sequence that saw the three versions of Pete Parker fight multiple villains that busted through the Multiverse after Doctor Strange botched a spell.
“So Eddie Brock makes it to the MCU but he never makes it out of a bar. But there were versions where he shows up earlier,” McKenna told Empire. “We were going to try to have him show up at the Statue of Liberty , and we were even toying with having him stuck in the Lincoln Tunnel.”
For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.
With how the film ended, it’s unclear if Holland’s Parker will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe or if the Sony-verse will ultimately become the main setting for future Spider-Man films, allowing Sony to combine all sorts of their characters into one cohesive world. However, after the box office slump “Morbius” saw in the second weekend of release, it’s unknown if the studio will ask for help from Marvel Studios on the spinoffs they continue to pump out.
Will a concrete crossover happen or does Sony simply keep using these post-credit scenes as a marketing tool?
