Got a Tip?

Venice 2015 Line-Up: ‘Equals’ With Kristen Stewart, ‘Beasts Of No Nation,’ ‘The Danish Girl,’ More

EqualsAside from a few dizzying highlights from the likes of Inarritu, Oppenheimer and Andersson, there was a slight sense that last year’s Venice Film Festival was a little bit of a let down, after a few cracking years in a row on the Lido. But it seems like it was nothing but a blip: perhaps because of the Oscar-winning success of the 2014 edition’s opening film “Birdman,” the full line-up announcement for the 2015 festival looks to be a strong return to form, on paper at least.

Joining the already-announced opener “Everest,” and the out-of-competition “Black Mass” in Italy is an enticing collection of established helmers and up-and-comers. Before they head to TIFF, Cary Fukunaga’s “Beasts Of No Nation,” Tom Hooper’s “The Danish Girl” and Charlie Kaufman’s “Anomalisa” will be world premiering at Venice. In terms of English-language fare, the festival has also bagged Drake Doremus’ sci-fi “Equals” with Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart, Atom Egoyan’s “Remember” with Christopher Plummer and Luca Guadignino’s “A Bigger Splash” with Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Matthias Schoenaerts and Dakota Johnson, plus a feature film by the great Laurie Anderson, her first. There’s also new movies from Aleksandr Sokurov, Pablo Trapero, Amos Gitai and Marco Bellocchio in the line-up, too.

Outside the main competition, there are bows for “Go With Me,” from “Kidnapping Freddy Heineken” director Daniel Alfredson and the TIFF-bound journalism drama “Spotlight” with Michael Keaton and Rachel McAdams, while the documentary section has some treats as well: Amy Berg’s film about Janis Joplin, something new from Tsai Ming-liang, Frederick Wiseman’s “On Jackson Heights,” and most intriguingly of all, a new documentary about Brian De Palma directed by Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow, which few knew existed until now. And in the Orrizonti sidebar, there’s Tobias Lindholm’s follow-up to “A Hijacking” with “A War,” Dito Montiel’s post-apocalyptic “Man Down” with Shia LaBoeuf and Gary Oldman, and Brady Corbet’s directorial debut “Childhood Of A Leader” with Berenice Bejo and Robert Pattinson (ensuring the R-Patz/K-Stew festival narrative continues…)

It’s a cracking selection, and our Jessica Kiang will be at the festival in just a few weeks to bring you verdicts on everything. The festival kicks off on September 2nd, and you can see the full line-up below.

  1. Horizons is its own competition with judges and prizes, it\’s simply for a different category of films. FYI, most of Pattinson\’s fans are not fans of Twilight, so you can disabuse your self of that myth. It\’s Stewart\’s fans who still worship Bella and Twilight. She\’s still milking that cow by kissing Stephanie Meyer\’s ass at her Twilight "short films," event.

  2. Yeah, TCOAL is in the Horizon section which isn\’t the main "In Competition" section. But TLOCZ hasn\’t even been shot yet, it\’s not anywhere, how ignorant of you.

  3. Why do you clowns need to make it an either or thing? Can\’t you like both actors? Ugh, fans of BOTH these actors are the F * C K i N G WORST. and to think they\’re both solid, but the Twilight movies that you all adore still suck S h * t.

  4. Continue to display your immaturity and ignorance, KStew stan. Horizons is a section of the festival competition for features “custom-format” works, with a wider view towards new trends in the expressive languages that converge in film. Jonathon Demme is the head of the jury that awards the prizes for the Horizon competition. So yes, TCOAL was selected to be in competition at this festival.

  5. only excited about beasts of no nation in competition. the danish gril sounds like a oscar bait role and i am so sick of those. also egoyan? still? after those last films he made? but the line up for out of competition is amazing.

  6. Like bad films getting selected by prestigious festivals never happen.
You should re-read the article, this is not "In Competition" section.
How is "TLCOZ" anywhere since it hasn\’t even been shot yet?

keep showing you "immaturity and ignorance of " cuz I appreciate a good laugh as well.

  7. You have two options, @Guest. Either Corbet is a very talented young director, since his film was selected for this prestigious competition, or the film got in on the strength of Pattinson\’s name and reputation alone. TLCOZ is also in competition in the Horizon category, but you keep showing the immaturity and ignorance of Kristen Stewart\’s fanbase, we always appreciate a good laugh.

  8. How do you know Brady Corbet is a talented director if this is his first film?

Only one of those films is in competition anyway, and only one of them has a leading role.

  9. Lovely to see Brady Corbet\’s first full length film premiering at Venice, and Pattinson deserves a nod for working with such talented young filmmakers (his newest film is with the Safdie brothers). As far as I know, there is no RP/KS narrative, they split over two years ago and both have girlfriends now, it\’s all good.

  10. You are the one who star this post twilight games Indiwire If you have a problem with separating the actors from twilight don\’t talk about this and don\’t engage tha hate if want to be taken seriously not like some tabloid. Will ask these actors if they distance themselves from twilight ot other stupid questions?

  11. It\’s an excellent line up…….at par with the TIFF list………this year, only the Cannes line up was as tepid and boring as one could recall in years!

  12. Can\’t wait to see tCoaL with berenice bejo and Rob Pattinson. He\’s taking on such diverse roles.
oh and spare the Rpattz/kstew stuff. They both have girlfriends now.

  13. "(ensuring the R-Patz/K-Stew festival narrative continues…)"
really? there\’s such a narrative the world cares about? I\’m sure there are plenty of other comments to be made about this lineup. I gave you people @ ThePlaylist the benefit of the doubt, especially considering how many complaints we\’ve read from all of you about crazies storming your comment sections, but I see you court it too. Sad.
