MGM is apparently in an aggressive campaign to reharvest its back catalog (read: recycle old ideas in lieu of staring at a blank page with no ideas), so with that in mind, they’re going to dust off the classic 1983 comedy, “Valley Girl,” starring Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman and turn it into a musical (MGM has apparently been developing a “Fame” redo as well).
According to the Hollywood Reporter, this modern update will, ” graft the Romeo and Juliet-style narrative of the original into a musical colored by reimagined classic ’80s tunes.” The original “Valley Girl” soundtrack featured many an ’80s New Wave and pop hits by people like Modern English, The Plimsouls, Sparks, Psychedelic Furs and the Payolas among others. No cast or directors are attached yet.
Mustachioed comedy prog-rocker Frank Zappa wrote and released the hit, “Valley Girl,” in 1982 featuring his daughter Moon Unit Zappa and famously sued the filmmakers for aping his idea and title to no avail.
