Got a Tip?

‘Valkyrie’ Trailer & Poster, Mediocre and Awesome Respectively

The trailer for “Valkyrie” ain’t all that and a bag of chips, but it is an indication of an entertaining thriller, something that won’t clean up at the Oscars but will make for a decent film. Because the poster is pretty cool, I expected to get the same from the trailer, but when it comes to this film that I almost gave up on the prospect of seeing, I’m not complaining.

The poster is certainly better than I would have expected, there is a certain emptiness to it, a simple straightforwardness, that almost makes me forget about all its production woes that have caused most people to take a negative view on “Valkyrie” without having seen it – I am included in that group of people.

Based on a true story involving an assassination plot against Adolph Hitler, the film directed by Bryan Singer is set to open in the US on the 26th of December, starring Tom Cruise, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy and Carice van Houten.

  1. This movie is getting dumped and buried by the studio that Cruise partly owns(United Artists). They seem to almost be trying to make sure that no one sees it. I can only assume that means it is no good.

The Nazi as hero movie will be released during Christmas, a top family fare zone.

So it’s going up against these family-type flicks:

    Hurricane Season(Forest Whitaker),
    Marley and Me(Jennifer Aniston), and
    Bedtime Stories (Adam Sandler).

But wait you say — these geniuses are simply filling the unmet niche for adult entertainment during X-Mas. Opps…also opening Dec 26:

    Revolutionary Road (Leonardo DiCaprio),
    Frost/Nixon (by Ron Howard), and
    Shanghai (John Cusack).

If United Artists is abadnoning it, what are we supposed to think?

  2. i dunno. i think it has a better shot of doing some business around Christmas than the previous Febuary release date. personally, i thought the film was dead in the water after the initial delay and then the release date bumps, but now this trailer has peaked my interest again. it almost makes u forget you’re watching a period piece, and really presents it as a thriller. but then again, it’s just a trailer. i’ve seen trailers that make shit look like gold.

now to address one complaint i’ve seen voiced on other messages boards, and that’s, why doesn’t tom cruise speak with an english accent? well, fuck that. it it was authentic, he’d be speaking German, not English with a German accent. so that’s that. i’d hate for a bad accent to mess up a movie for me (see The Devil’s Own of Seven Years in Tibet)…better to just not do one then. for instance the Definace trailer has all three actors doing Russian accents, but i don’t buy it.
