Since sequels seem to be winning the good fight over original ideas in Hollywood these days — please see the recent news that “Grown Ups 2” is tracking better than “Pacific Rim” — why not toss around ideas for a followup to Michael Mann‘s crime epic “Heat“? Indeed, Val Kilmer, who starred in the film as one of Robert De Niro‘s criminal crew, has been giving the matter some thought and has idea that he thinks would work.
Sitting down to chat with Larry King on his Hulu show (yes, Larry King has a Hulu show), Kilmer shared his idea, and it involves getting closer with one of his co-stars in the film. “Here’s my pitch,” Kilmer said. “You remember Natalie Portman in it? She’s Pacino’s adopted daughter, so she comes home and says, ‘Daddy, daddy, I want you to meet my fiancé.’ And it’s me. He’s retired and I come to Chicago where he’s retired back to and I’m going to torture him, and then I’m going to kill him.”
Well, it’s certainly original, even if it’s completely contrived and kind of dumb, but hey, he’s just spitballing a movie that will probably never happen, so we’ll cut the guy some slack. However, one franchise that keeps threatening to come back is “Top Gun,” with Jerry Bruckheimer recently telling us that a sequel is still very much on the table, even with the unfortunate passing of Tony Scott. “We’re at a point right now where everybody wants to make it,” he said, indicating that both Tom Cruise and the studio were on the same page — and the Iceman is ready too.
“I think it wouldn’t be that difficult to maintain the spirit of it,” Kilmer said about following in the footsteps of the original. “Tony was the most generous, positive director I’ve ever worked for in film. He’s not known as an actor’s director because he’s such a vivid stylist with the camera … but he really loved acting and getting the shot.”
So there you go: Kilmer is ready for both followups to “Top Gun” and “Heat” — but, are you? [The Wrap]
