Got a Tip?

‘Upgrade’ Trailer: People Are Still Trying To Make Logan Marshall-Green A Thing

Shouldn’t it be called “Downgrade?” It’s fairly juvenile and mean, but it’s hard to mention Logan Marshall-Green without describing him as the poor man’s Tom Hardy, a dig we’re pretty sure we’re not the only ones to use. But hey, give the “Prometheus” actor a chance, right? Blumhouse, the producers of “Get Out” and “The Purge,“is giving the actor that chance in “Upgrade,” which is basically Blumhouse’s take on the hyper-violent genre film, in a film not called “The Purge.”

The movie’s not out til June 1, but reviews are already out there. “No need to see ‘Upgrade’ when you’ve already seen it 1,000 times,” EW recently wrote in their review. Here’s the synopsis, but the gist is “Upgrade” is set in a near-future, technology controls nearly all aspects of life. But when a self-identified technophobe gets his world turned upside down, his only hope for revenge is an experimental computer chip implant called Stem.

UPGRADE is a thrilling and hyper violent vision of the future from the producers of GET OUT and THE PURGE, and the creator of SAW and INSIDIOUS. After his wife is killed during a brutal mugging that also leaves him paralyzed, Grey Trace (Logan Marshall Green, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, PROMETHEUS) is approached by a billionaire inventor with an experimental cure that will “upgrade” his body. The cure – an Artificial Intelligence implant called STEM – gives Grey physical abilities beyond anything experienced and the ability to relentlessly claim vengeance against those who murdered his wife and left him for dead.

“Upgrade” is directed by actor/director Leigh Whannell (known for directing “Insidious: Chapter 3” and acting roles in several “Saw” movies, the “Insidious” movies and more) and co-stars Richard Anastasios and Rosco Campbell. Here’s the red band and green band trailer in case you’re one of those people inclined to get as much Logan Marshall-Green as you can.

  1. Oh wait, the writer is “ThePlaylist”, which explains why this post is so anonymous and unusually snarky. Pretty sure you all did a good job of praising Logan Marshall Green for The Invitation, but now you’re dropping loads on him.

  2. Why include the snarky sub-heading? His consistent work as the lead in a series of well received shows and films is proof that he’s a “thing”. Not a superstar “thing”, but one that people want to watch. This reeks of the same indiscriminate anger as the “Stop Trying to Make Armie Hammer a Movie Star” article in that something about the actor just seems to annoy the writer in an inexplicable fashion and they’re taking this as an opportunity to express that distaste.

  3. You writers at the playlist are a disgrace attacking an actor like this is so unprofessional, there are a lot of people who are fans of Logan Marshall Green, why don’t you stick to reviewing films and bringing us information on movies instead of subjecting an actor to unfair criticism and insults, (” the poor man’s Tom Hardy” really!!!!) you writers at the playlist are seriously immature and lowering yourself to a level of Degeneracy that well be hard to redeem yourselves from.

  4. First the ps on the last Von Trier movie review and now this ? That was so low to your part that to attack this man so visciously , and plus cowardly by not stating who wrote it , i totally lost credibility in you , i thought you were the last good movie website left but i’m wrong. You lost a reader

  5. Yeah, this is ridiculous, baseless, and profoundly unnecessary. Didn’t even notice the ‘no listed writer’ reality until commenters pointed it out. Fuckin’ weak, y’all.

  6. Did Logan Marshall-Green sleep with the author’s wife? I’ve never heard anyone else dig on Green like this and most of the reviews for Upgrade I’ve seen thus far are overwhelmingly positive. I’m not even a big fan of the guy but this is just childish and sophomoric writing. A poor man’s Tom Hardy? Like how The Playlist is a poor man’s IndieWire? Grow up.

  7. Writers like you always make me laugh. You call yourselves “professionals”, but you’re all bent of shape about an actor like Logan Marshall Green starring in a film that looks like it’ll be pretty damn good. Have you not bothered to see “Quarry” or “The Invitation”? Those were some of his recent works and they’re excellent in the eyes of most viewers. Yet, here you are, trying to shit on him because you got a problem with his latest film and it’s funny how you’re keeping yourself anonymous because you know some people will shit on you if they even find your social media profiles (if you have any) and/or email address.

As for me, I’ll tell you my name because I couldn’t care less if you know who the fuck I am or not. My name’s Adam Washington, an aspiring screenwriter who recently graduated from an accredited university and who’s telling you to go fuck yourself and your chumpy works. Thanks a plenty 🙂

  8. I agree with the overall gist of the other comments. This review is unjustifiably spiteful. The writer has embraced the snarky underbelly of social commentary to their detriment. This is my first time reading anything on the Playlist and I won’t be back. For the record, I loved Logan in everything I’ve seen him in, especially Quarry. Tom Hardy is good too but I don’t appreciate the artificial comparison. Lastly, Upgrade was freaking awesome. I left the theater with a big smile on my face, which doesn’t happen much these days.
