Recent reports from earlier in the year had revealed that the “Star Wars” film produced by Marvel Studios‘ Kevin Feige with Michael Waldron (“Loki,” “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness“) attached to write and director Patty Jenkins’ (“Wonder Woman“) own movie “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron” have been shelved for the foreseeable future. This put a huge spotlight on the untitled installment that would be helmed by two-time Oscar-winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel“) as the project most likely gearing up for that December 19, 2025 release date as it was said to be eyed as going in front of cameras next.
As Star Wars Celebration is underway in London, the studio has finally given us a better idea of what to expect from the film as they announced Daisy Ridley will be back as Rey Skywalker. Cementing that the pic will take place after the events of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” allowing for more sequel trilogy cast members like John Boyega and Oscar Isaac to come back too as the “New Jedi Order” film takes place 15 years after the events of the last adventure that saw the last gasp of The First Order.
On the creative front, Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders,” “Eastern Promises“) was tapped by Lucasfilm to help continue work on the film’s script after screenwriters Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen,” “Prometheus“) and Justin Britt-Gibson exited last month. Fans had been energized when Lindelof was announced for the movie after the acclaimed “Watchmen” continuation series at HBO. Despite that shake-up it doesn’t sound like things have derailed, just potentially delayed a little.
Of course, fans have been mostly sustained by the multiple live-action “Star Wars” shows airing on Disney+ and haven’t seen a theatrical release since 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” Many have been exercised their patience with Lucasfilm as they try to figure out a post-Skywalker Saga plan which is obviously a difficult task that would take time. While others have been less than enthusiastic and the stakes couldn’t be higher on the theatrical side of the franchise after “Solo: A Star Wars Story” was considered a box office disappointment.
