Yesterday morning, a clip from Jason Reitman’s much buzzed-about frequent flyer dramedy, “Up In The Air,” starring George Clooney and Vera Farmiga, was released on Apple and we were decidedly underwhelmed.
Some even took it harder than that and perhaps even personally. From all accounts, the job downsizing storyline and economic hard-hittin’-times theme of the film is evidently making the picture potentially the, “timeliest, most zeitgeist-capturing movie released this awards season.” But since the aforementioned clip didn’t quite capture those qualities, Vulture seemed rather pissed, upset or maybe even wanted their money back (time is money after all).
Perhaps to make up for the meh quality in that clip, a teaser-trailer has been released. Let the kvetching begin! And or more sarcastic commenting shortly? Nope, this one seems to nail the tone of the script quite well and contains the moving and difficult (not to mention a bit duplicitous) speech Clooney has to make in the first act about acclimating to the conditions of being unemployed. Clooney’s character is essentially not super different from his “Michael Clayton” role. He’s an adjuster, a fixer. His job in the picture is to gently, but motivatingly prepare you for life outside the workforce. It’s calculated and cold — sort of like his carefree character in the beginning — and at the same time it’s strangely inspiring. Much better on this teaser! Now all Paramount has to do is make sure they don’t stick a cornball Coldplay song onto the mainstream version for popcorn audiences (as much as that might sell tickets), and we should all be fine. Agreed on this. The teaser works well, and the understatement is refreshing. Even that monologue which could potentially be pretty leaden – and may be a bit more so in the film, who knows – works largely because Clooney knows how to sell the line in a way that feels more weary than instructional. He's kind of an underrated actor I think (at least as underrated as an Academy Award winner can be), and if Reitman's involvement doesn't get me anticipating this film as much as all the positive press probably should, Clooney's involvement does.
Music choice likewise is nice. Stately piano that doesn't register as too manipulative. Can we not have a trailer for this please? The teaser works just fine for me.
Thought it was a fantastic teaser. Left a lot of mystery of what is going on in the movie.
I like the teaser. Agree that it leaves a lot of mystery, but sets the tone for what might be at stake.
But this teaser works best for those that have followed this project on movie sites. I wonder how it would appeal to audiences seeing it without any prior knowledge of the movie. Although opening at every upcoming festival and the press coming with that will be a nice additional marketing boost (free of charge to the studio I guess).
There are now basically trailers made for online fans and trailers made for mainstream audiences. This one is the former.
And the rumours of Clooney taking a tent-pole project have slowed too (you guys haven't mentioned anything in weeks). Hopefully he keeps it interesting.
You guys should just start a Clooney in Bourne 4 rumour. Or Ocean's Ultimatum: Soderbergh, Clooney and Damon re-unite.
I still remember the GI Joe rumours, hahahaha.
Fyi, that is NOT a Coldplay song on the trailer. (And they are not cheesy, just too good to be true, and for some to admit.)
