Got a Tip?

Unrated Extended Cut Of Ridley Scott’s ‘The Counselor’ Coming To Blu-ray in February

The Counselor

Back in October, we pored over Cormac McCarthy‘s script for “The Counselor” and compared it to the theatrical cut of Ridley Scott‘s film—and there was a fair bit left on the cutting room floor. While we dug into The 5 Best Deleted Scenes from the movie, there is much more, and now you’re going to see it all.

20th Century Fox has announced that the Unrated Extended Cut of the movie will hit Blu-ray next month. So, how much longer will be it? According to Collider, the unrated cut runs 138 minutes long, roughly 20 minutes longer than than the 117 minute theatrical cut. And we’ll see what material makes it back in as there is something interesting stuff left out including more zaniness with Javier Bardem‘s Reiner, the fate of cheetahs, more Rosie Perez, extended sequences and more. (Again, check out our feature and no word yet if Cameron Diaz‘s original Rihanna-esque dialogue will be put back in).

This new cut will only be available on Blu-ray, with the theatrical version on DVD. Here’s Fox’s official release below, but note: the runtimes include the bonus features, so as awesome as a 3 hour 40 minute “The Counselor” sounds, that’s not happening.

“The Counselor” arrives on home video on February 11th.

The Counselor
An all-star cast, featuring Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, and Penélope Cruz, sizzles in this adrenaline-fueled thriller from visionary director Ridley Scott and Academy Award-winning novelist Cormac McCarthy.  A talented lawyer (Fassbender) known for doing the right thing for the wrong people decides to put his connections to the test by diving into a treacherous drug deal for some quick cash. 1. Roxie, have you seen the cut where there were more of Diaz's scenes and in which she used the original dialogue?I would love to hear more about them and a description of them/your opinion on them! Thanks!

  2. Now people will have an opportunity to actually see that Diaz indeed gave the best supporting performance of the year. Many of her meaty scenes ended up on cutting floor. And hope FOX reconsiders putting back her original accent in the extended cut. It was so good. Diaz was proud of it and felt disappointed when they made her re-dub it in post.

  3. I'm glad to see this announcement. It looks as if I'll be getting both DVD (theatrical cut) and blu-ray. I like the theatrical release, but I'm eager to see what was left out.

  4. If the runtimes include the bonus features, then that would mean those bonus features run for 45 minutes since the press release indicates a 162 minute runtime for the Theatrical Cut (bonus features included) and the running time for the Theatrical Cut (bonus features not included) was 117 minutes.
Soooo…if we substract those 45 minutes of bonus features from the indicated runtime of 220 minutes for the Unrated Extended Cut, we get a runtime of 175 minutes.
Am I wrong in assuming that?
