“The movie continues to be in development, and we’re still working on it with him,” Legendary exec Jon Jashni recently said about Guillermo del Toro‘s "Pacific Rim 2." And the director has been emphasizing the project, which had reportedly been put on hold, is still very much something he’s working on, as the script continues to come together. Now, Universal has finally weighed in.

The studio has announced yesterday that "Pitch Perfect 3" is taking the previously planned release date for "Pacific Rim 2" of August 4, 2017. That said, the press release made it clear they are still pursuing a followup to the robot smashing blockbuster, saying the following in a press release:
The filmmakers, Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having PACIFIC RIM 2, the sequel to 2013’s PACIFIC RIM, which generated more than $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of PACIFIC RIM 2 so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.

I’m not sure I’d call the first "Pacific Rim" an "amazing experience" so much as one delivered in murky, unmemorable 3D, but the movie clearly has its fans. And whatever del Toro, Universal, and Legendary have up their sleeve for the next chapter, they seem to be promising that they’ll bring it in a big way.
"I\’m not sure I\’d call the first "Pacific Rim" an "amazing experience" so much as one delivered in murky, unmemorable 3D…" The movie wasn\’t shot or really even designed to be in 3D. Try the 2D version before you knock the look of the film.
