So, is this more post-scandal fallout for Kristen Stewart, or Universal sticking to a plan they hinted at a while ago? If we were to guess… it's probably the latter.
Whatever is going on in his personal life, Universal still believes in director Rupert Sanders, and, even more, they very much believe in Chris Hemsworth. As for Stewart? Maybe not so much. Deadline reveals that the already-developing "Snow White And The Huntsman" sequel is pulling back a bit, as decisions need to be made about whether it will be a direct follow-up, or a spinoff centered on Hemsworth. Now before KStew fans lose their marbles, it must be said that way back in April, this idea was already being toyed around with so it isn't exactly a shock. And add to that the fact that Hemsworth already leads a lucrative franchise in "Thor," is part of billion dollar "The Avengers" and stars in Ron Howard's "Rush" at the studio… if we were the accountants, he would seem to be the safer bet on his own. And certainly, everyone at Uni want to keep him happy and under their roof. But right now, there is no work being done until a firm decision is made on what direction the follow-up will take—and it should be noted that Sanders isn't optioned for the sequel (though, obviously, he's a contender).
But if he doesn't return for more 'Huntsman,' Universal has something else to keep him busy, snapping up the rights to the upcoming book "90 Church: The True Story of the Narcotics Squad From Hell" for him to direct. Penned by Dean Unkefer, the book tells the exploits of a group of thirty Federal Bureau of Narcotics agents, who took on the Mafia and organized crime (while the FBI turned its head) during the '60s and '70s to make cases and bring criminals to justice using a variety of means, from informers to more direct means of persuasion. 'Huntsman' producers Joe Roth and Palak Patel will team with Deborah Giarratana and work with Sanders to get this one developed. Sounds interesting enough, although, kind of almost exactly like "Gangster Squad" in a way, just with a different period setting.
So tabloid stuff aside, Sanders is moving on, as is Stewart who recently signed for "Lie Down In Darkness" and Robert Pattinson who joined Werner Herzog's "Queen Of The Desert" earlier today. Maybe the rest of the media can move on as well?
It's incredible how determined some people are to forget that cheating men go through the same things that women do in the media. People cry "sexism" over Kristen Stewart because she was dropped (and maybe not even that) from one movie, while TAG Heuer, Accenture, AT&T, General Motors, Gillette, and Gatorade all dropped Tiger Woods after his scandal. I'm not saying that people should be punished for their private lives, but it's ridiculous to say that women are punished more than men.
As for the director of SWATH not getting as much flak as Stewart – that's simple. He's not as famous.
Stewart can't act for one and now she has pissed the fans that Universal hoped she would bring to watch their film. She failed. Why should they hire her when the public can't stand her. Her few crazy stans scream and threaten loud but are nothing in comparsion to the rest of the audiance.
She's box office poison. Every film outside of Twilight was a flop, the excuse they are indies is bullshit. SWATH wasn't a success either.
Nice ironic title "buy something for this director". He partly (took part in) changing some others' life, then lives his own pretty well. Robert Pattinson is gonna work with more really good directors. As Kristen Stewart has already done a good acting job far before Twilight, for example back to 1994's Speak.
it's kinda funny watching the twihards reaction. it's like their shocked that a studio has no soul. oh well they got two new friends in the form of sasha stone, and sophia bush i think those two ladies are going to get some pitchforks.
I cannot understand why Universal is to blame… I would too will be gladly droping Kristen. Not because of the scandal she involved with Rupert Sanders because she can NOT act!!! I know that she is famous and have a huge fan base but most of them come out from Twilight and guess what…. Huge amount of the ladies love the Twilight saga now trully hate Kristen because she hurt their precious man Robert. I cannot comment on Theron because I didnt like her on this movie but also I know that she is not numb as Kristen. On the other hand Chris looks like a nice one to go on because he also have a nice fan base being built up with Thor and Avengers and I am pretty sure we will see his nice acting skills on the "Rush"… He can do more than what he has been given on the first SWATH. Honestly I only watched the first movie because of him.
While I think Kristen Stewart is responsible of this mess and I don't have simpathy for her -She's a grown woman (22 is an adult) and she knows the difference between right and wrong-; if Universal hire Saunders for the sequel, well, they're morons. Saunders is equally guilty of this mess and deserves the same punishment as Stewart. Both destroyed a marriage -He's married and she knew he was married, even she worked with his wife- and didn't care for their actions.
SHAME ON YOU, Universal!!
More than one person has been using my initials I see. Or maybe I've been sleep-commenting again. Also 24 comments in less than an hour!
I am almost certain that Kristen did not want to do the sequel with or without Sanders. I am happy she is not doing it even if it was with another director. I was never happy that she was continuing with the franchise stuff. She already had one franchise under her belt, Twilight, and a very successful one. She did not need another one. She is better at indie movies where the scripts and the characters are better. That's where she shines. Further, the SWATH script did not give her much to say but she made the best of it with what litle she got. Sanders probably needs the money more than Kristen does, and Hollywood men take care of one another. I will be disturbed if Sanders gets the SWATH sequel even if Kristen is not in it. If he does, I too will boycott anything coming from Universal. She does not need to be in the sequel but neither does him. I am done with Universal.
All of you woman need to calm yourselves. Long before the news of this scandal broke there was talks, not for a sequel, but for a spin-off of Hemsworth's character. Secondly, Stewart brought nothing to this movie – that was Sander's vision and the acting of Theron and Hemsworth. She was dropped not because of the scandal, but because there was never any intention of the sequel focusing on her character, though the scandal didn't help, I'm sure. Plus, she's a lot more expensive than Sander's – whose cheap, will work for even cheaper now, and was the sole credit behind the vision of Snow White. When it comes down to it, you go the cheaper route.
This is truly disgusting… What a bunch of misogynistic a-holes!! I will be boycotting everything in the entertainment industry with the names Universal, Joe Roth, Palak Patel and Rupert Sanders.
I'm sorry but Rupert Sanders is a 40-year old married man with two kids . He is the wrong man in this scandal , he should lose the job !
to the ones going on and on about sexism. this is nothing new from movie studios and hollywood.
Hemsworth may have emerged from SWATH in better shape than his co-stars but it was largely by default because Stewart was miscast and Theron was too shrill. He's basically playing a muddy Thor with an ax instead of a hammer and with less of a story to build an adventure around. Universal should spend their money elsewhere.
Did any of you stop to think that maybe someone important just finally realized that Kstew can't act her way out of a paper bag! Chris Hemsworth is the only reason that movie made any money.
Kristen Stewart doesn't need to get involved in another series, so I'm not disappointed to hear this. I did enjoy SWATH, but she has important awards-caliber work to do in dramas or quirky indies, not big-budget action films. Universal should, however, expect a major boycott on a Huntsman sequel if Sanders is the director – not only by young Twihards & Krisbians, but also middle-aged feminists like myself. The 90 Church film sounds immiently skippable also. Will someone please come forth with memorable scripts for Kristen Stewart? Like Bill Condon says, she has unlimited potential.
UH OH UNIVERSAL will have the fury of twilight fans, robert fans, kristen fans, robsten fans, united or separated teams in 3, 2, 1 LOL
Your Comment Is this for real! What is going on? Has this sexism always existed in this industry? Women isn't it time we take this seriously and make our voices heard?
Wow!!!!!!
I smell sexism from all of this situation.
F you universal, this is war. We will stand up for our daughters to your sexist industry. Make no mistake you will feel the heat!
So i didnt know Universal executives wanted to be involved in a sexist scandal. Didnt know they were so into gossip and personal lives of people.Stop denigrating women!
think they are just sticking to their plan to begin with. from the beginning, it sounded like they wanted to focus on hemsworth. however, they should consider getting a new director. he's not very good.
Now I'm pissed. This is so unfair. That clown gets a gig and she loses a gig. Somebody has to speak up for her. She should be allowed to work. Hollywood is full of hypocrites. They'll greenlight a movie made by pedophiles ( Woody Allen, Roman Polanski) and male cheaters (half of the population of Hollywood) but prosecute and banish a 22 year old woman. The pictures weren't even that bad and for everyone to act like she's the biggest cheater to have ever cheated. Lay off.
