Guys, it's only been a few hours since the last "Star Wars" sequel rumor (that Matthew Vaughn might direct) so here's another one: Harrison Ford might return! Whoa dudes, Han Solo in 'Episode 7'!
EW has this latest bit of news (sort of) with their "highly placed source" saying, “Harrison is open to the idea of doing the movie and he’s upbeat about it, all three of them are.” As fans already know and have deconstructed, it was revealed that George Lucas met with Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher prior to the official announcement of Lucasfilm's sale and the new trilogy of movies. But the news of Ford being interested is somewhat surprising.
As Movieline nicely noted a couple of years ago, Ford has a long history of being generally disinterested in talking about, acknowledging or referencing the franchise that made him a star. And his last outing for Lucas in "Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull" wasn't exactly a shining moment for everyone involved. But maybe since Lucas won't be directly involved (he won't even choose the director), maybe that's an incentive. And Ford's last few movies — "Extraordinary Measures," "Morning Glory," "Cowboys & Aliens" — haven't been so hot either.
But that said, Ford isn't moving until he sees a script and who knows who the director will be. So basically, the spin that he's "upbeat" might just be relative to the fact that he hasn't turned them down yet. Who knows how he'll feel next week, next month or next month. And does he really want to start getting asked all over again about Han Solo and the saga, which the 70 year old actor so clearly disdains it? Maybe if he gets it in his contract he doesn't have to press, that'll be another push in the right direction. Or, maybe by then Ridley Scott will need him for "Blade Runner 2."
So in short: we'll see.
As 'cool' as it may seem to have the original actors back, it just wouldn't seem right. There would be too much of a familiarity to it all. Leave it to other 60-something/70-something actors to plat those characters instead.
Kevin, have you ever thought about about writing your articles in English?
I would like to see Luke as a ghost ala Obi Wan Kenobi. I think that's the only interesting way he could be incorporated.
Bringing back the original cast would be the absolute worst movie they could make for these movies. I think we all remember how Kingdom of the Crystal Skull turned out…
As much as people may SAY they want the original cast back…they don't. You don't. We don't. Let's keep Han perfect. Let these new things be what they are. Surprise us my making fun and good movies. Not by preserving what is already perfectly preserved in the original trilogy. I can't believe I typed this many words about this…
I also vote for less Star Wars related news stories, I don't mind hearing about it every once in a while but can we maybe just do the big scoops and leave the rumors aside?
Dear Disney and LucasFilm,
Congratulations! You now possess the power of the force and with it comes a great deal of responsibility. So here's what you're going to do:
STEP 1 – you're going to set the new films (Episode 7, 8 and 9) 30 years after episode 6 (Jedi) and you're going to have the FULL original cast back playing themselves as older people. DID YOU HEAR ME? You are going to cast Harrison Ford as Han Freaking solo, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher as Leia, Billy Dee Williams as Lando and even Denis Lawson back as Wedge Antilles. HERE'S THE CATCH: THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE THE MAIN CHARACTERS. They are older now and you can use them as side characters revolving around NEW lead characters. We don't care what new characters take over leading roles but you HAVE to bring back the old cast for this all to be LEGIT and to come FULL circle. PLEASE don't cast new actors in these roles and don't CGI faces to make them look like the actors 30 years ago (Like in Tron Legacy) PLEASE!!! You can even kill them off in the first scene, just don't replace them.
STEP 2 – DON'T LISTEN TO ANYTHING GEORGE LUCAS SAYS! You paid him $4 Billion so tell him to shut up take his money and go make Radioland Murders Part 2! Put somebody in charge of directing who knows what we want. WE WANT EMPIRE STRIKES BACK ON CRACK. That means ACTING, ACTING, ACTING, ACTING, CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, DRAMA, DEATH!!!!!
STEP 3 – Whatever you did to make AVENGERS as good as it was, do the same for STAR WARS! I feel the force is strong with you and your company can pull this off. The prequels were the worst films EVER MADE! They showed us just how evil the dark side of the force can be when it seduced George Lucas and took over his ability to distinguish right from wrong! Please redeem the Star Wars Universe. DO OR DO NOT…THERE IS NO TRY
Sincerely,
Geeks
He's upbeat because Lucas is neither writing nor directing Episode 7 ha ha. What was it he said about his original dialog in the first Star Wars? You can type this shit but you sure can't say it.
Are you guys going to post every single bit of Star Wars news constantly? I like The Playlist because it's more cinephile related than geek related like Aintitcool, CHUD or /film as those grow very tiresome.
