Whatever your thoughts on 2019’s movies, the tail-end of this year continues to look like it will offer an impressive mix of high-concept genre fare, long-awaited auteur experiments and your typical period movies whose sole purpose, it seems, is to rack up as many Oscar nominations as possible. But make sure to leave room in your calendar for “Uncut Gems,” which now has a set release date of December 13, at least, according to the director’s Elara Pictures production company who tweeted out the date this weekend (however not confirmed by A24 yet, but presumably they aren’t speaking out of turn).

Details are minimal for the Safdie brothers’ follow-up to their 2017 breakout A24 hit “Good Time,” but we know that “Uncut Gems” is set in the diamond district of New York City. Adam Sandler plays Howard Ratner, a jewelry store owner, and dealer to the rich and famous, who must find a way to pay his debts when his merchandise is taken from one of his top sellers and girlfriend.

Anticipation is sky-high for this one. Wondering why? Well, “Good Time” – a frenetic, energetic, beautifully chaotic gunshot of a movie featuring arguably Robert Pattinson’s best performance to date – is now streaming on Amazon Prime, so go find out for yourself.
Along with Rian Johnson’s just-as-anticipated murder-mystery “Knives Out,” the final few weeks of 2019 are shaping up to be an exciting time for “Sorry To Bother You” and “Atlanta” star Lakeith Stanfield, who will star in “Uncut Gems” across from Sandler.
The rest of the cast includes NBA player Kevin Garnett, and R&B star The Weeknd, alongside the likes of Idina Menzel, Judd Hirsch, and Eric Bogosian. Don’t ask questions. Just have faith in the brothers Safdie.
The movie reunites Josh and Benny Safdie with Ronald Bronstein, who helped scribe “Good Time.” As with “Good Time,” A24 is set to take the lead on the domestic release of “Uncut Gems” later this year, and Netflix is slated to push the drama to an international audience soon after. In the meantime, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for a trailer. With a December date set, it’s likely “Uncut Gems” will premiere first during the fall film festival circuit, either at TIFF, Venice, Telluride or perhaps even the more fitting New York Film Festival. Martin Scorsese is an executive producer on the film, and he has strong ties to NYFF, we’ll see.
