Here’s a trailer that’s surely going to annoy any parent that is forced to endure “The Grinch” this weekend. Brace yourself, “UglyDolls,” the movie based on toy series, is here.
The Uglydoll toy series is a brand that was started, adorably enough, with a long-distance a letter David Horvath wrote to Sun-Min Kim just after she had to move away due to a student visa expiring. That letter had a cartoon of his character “Wage” at the bottom with the words, “Working hard to make our dreams come true so we can be together again soon,” next to it. That dream was to tell stories through books and toys, and that dream definitely came true.
The brand is distinguished by its definition of the word “ugly.” In the “uglyverse,” “ugly” means unique and special, something that we should be celebrating, something that makes us different, and never hiding the “twists or turns” which make us who we are, both inside and out. Hence, the “UglyDolls” is an animated movie about acceptance, diversity, joy, and friendship. It shows us that the words ugly and pretty and perfect and imperfect are just words and it’s up to you what you make of those words. And most of all it’s about being the best version of yourself that you can be.
The film will feature the voices of stars Kelly Clarkson, Janelle Monáe, Wanda Sykes, Emma Roberts, Gabriel Iglesias, Nick Jonas, Blake Shelton, and Pitbull.
In an article on USA Today, Clarkson stated, “Moxy could not be more perfect for me. Because I’m not really that (princess) girl. I’m really this girl,” She continued, “Moxy’s personality is like 100 percent me. It’s not acting. It’s weird, it’s like she was written for me.”
Uglydolls will be the first family and animation project produced by STXfilms. The film is set to be released in the U.S. on May 10, 2019.
