The foreboding twang that kicks off the opening theme of “Twin Peaks” holds a special place in the hearts of many. Arguably one of the finest opening musical numbers in the history of the small screen medium, the music itself is nothing if not iconic. It plunges us into a disorienting dreamscape dotted by imposing fir trees, unspeakable strangeness and family diners where the coffee and donuts are damn fine.

The demand for David Lynch and Mark Frost’s landmark show has seen something of a resurgence in recent months, surely due in no small degree to the show’s impending third season (set to debut on Showtime sometime in 2017). And now, as if to answer the collective prayers of the “Twin Peaks” masses, Mondo has announced that they will release a reissued vinyl pressing of Angelo Badalamenti’s score for the show, as well as his soundtrack for the David Lynch-directed prequel “Fire Walk With Me”.
A release date has yet to be set, but it seems safe to say that we’ll be able to get our hands on a Mondo-approved copy well before the third season bows in 2017. Here’s the update from Mondo in the meanwhile: “We’re happy to say that ‘Twin Peaks’ and ‘Fire Walk With Me’ lacquers were cut last week and are currently winging their way to the plant to be turned into test pressings.” Exciting news indeed, and I, for one, can’t wait to see how the artwork for this release turns out, as Mondo consistently turns out some of the most beautiful and ornately detailed fan artwork available today.

In the interim, indie group The Joy Formidable has just released a trippy, almost funereal cover of Badalamenti’s theme song. It starts off lush and atmospheric, with those instantly identifiable opening notes, before dissolving into an exalted mid-song choral refrain that launches the group’s cover into straight-up shoegaze territory. The heavier-than-thou Welsh outfit made a righteous ruckus on their 2014 LP Wolf’s Law and their cover here is pretty awesome. The members of the band are allegedly really, really stoked for the show’s return and wouldn’t you know it, so are we! Listen to the Joy Formidable’s cover of the “Twin Peaks” theme below.
